Question about slugging a pistol barrel

Rcmodel:

Affirmative, I do own and shoot a STAR 9mm, a 30M to be precise. Can I ask why you wondered this?. The 92FS is issued and although I do shoot it on my own when I feel like it, I can't shoot it in competition (department policy) and I have to provide my own ammo when I train with it on my own.

I had not thought of the implications on slugging the barrel from the chamber as described in post #4. Great tip.

Thanks everyone for your inputs.
If a barrel has an even number of lands and grooves, it is easy to measure the diameter because the high points are opposite one another on opposite ends of the diameter. If an odd number of lands and grooves, it is trickier. And I don't actually know the trick. But I'll bet rcmodel does and this is probably why he wanted to know the model of the gun.

Wow you must be psychic. From post #16

Well, from the question in post #23, I inferred that Nordeste did not pick up on the odd-even point (which many people would miss), so I answered for the benefit of any who might need the hint.

Here is a Star 9mm chamber. Note the huge throat:

This is where gas cutting will occur. You need to have the bullet seal the throat, not just the bore.

Lost Sheep: You're right. I had missed that one and you did well in clarifying that. I appreciate.

918V: Got your point, too. That barrel looks definitely like a STAR barrel, but not like a 30M barrel. However, I have to say that in the case of my barrel, it looks pretty similar when it comes to the throat dimensions and even the rifling. I have a .40 S&W case in my reloading room that I'll use to melt some lead in, then hammer it (carefully!) down my chamber and try to get the exact dimensions, then post them here.

From the characteristics of my chamber/throat, do you think this pistol would be more accurate using lead bullets?. Just a thought.

Thanks again for your inputs, gents.
