I just bought a new Kahr CW9 that I'm going to break in at the range next week. I've heard that Kahrs can be finicky about ammo. What experiences has anyone had regarding the best 9mm FMJ ammo for a Kahr CW9?
My CW9 broke before I got half way thru its first box of ammo. But since its return from Kahr (they were a bit slow but it was fixed right) mine has been close to perfect and is not fuzzy about ammo at all.
I shoot mostly my 147gr hard cast lead FP reloads and it goes 800-1200 rounds between take downs for cleaning -- basically I shoot it until I start getting failure to go into battery and then I clean it and repeat.
I recommend 147 gr Winchester Ranger-T JHP for carry, although I don't carry mine, its a practice analog for my Kahr PM40, but I do shoot it a lot.
To brake it in, get whatever FMJ you can buy cheapest. I used Monarch steel cases and CCI aluminum Blazer for the first 200 rounds, then some of all the JHP I had on hand (147gr Ranger-T, 124gr Gold Dot, 147gr Hydrashok) and mostly my relaods and aluminum Blazer since.
My CW9 has performed well with everything, however, I only use Kahr mags.
Tried some less expensive third party mags, that were a dogs. Slow learner I guess.
My K-9 Elite eats anything I feed it. I had an 11 year old E-9 until a few days ago, it too would eat anything.
As for break-in ammo. I would not use the cheap stuff. When breaking-in a new gun, from any manufacturer, I use good ammo. For the simple reason that I want to make sure it is functioning as it should. Cheap ammo may cause an FTF, then I would have to determine if it was the ammo or the gun.
congrats on the kahr i love mine and all the ones that i have ever tried, in the 9mm models i have had good experience with reloads, ww, umc etc i have never had an issue with feeding a kahr at all. there are some out there i am sure but no complaints here.
You gotta run at least 200 rds through it like it says in the manual. I shoot WWB cci and Winchester ranger 124 +p all through my CW9. I did not have a single problem the whole way through since I did not rack the slide like a sling shot. The biggest problem people get into with kahrs is that you have to pull the slide back and use the slide release to rack the rounds. Great choice on the CW9 its my everyday carry weapon, I put one of those Agrips from Kahrs website on and that makes the recoil non existent, and its feels good too!
If it's for combat purpose, make sure you test fire it with JHP. A PM9 I tested had a "nose dive" issue with every other mag I fired with Speer Gold Dot 124gr. How well it feeds FMJ is irrelevant, unless that's what you intend to use.
My NIB P45 made it thru the 200 round breakin without a hitch and I was using CCI (aluminum & brass). This kind of surprised me as it was VERY tight when I took it out of the box...
I never had a problem during the "break-in" period. I am now well over a thousand rounds. It eats everything that I have fed it with out any problems. I love this gun!!
