I just purchased a Ruger AR 556, which was I must say quite hard to find. I did notice that the entire barrel is much thicker than my DPMS AR. What is the significance of this? Is it for accuracy, durability, strength?
Thicker barrels are stiffer, and tend to be more accurate, especially as they get hot. Thinner barrels are lighter and easier to carry around. There are a many options in between to suit the tastes and needs of individual shooters. The trend is toward thinner barrels for general use. Lots of demand for heavier barrels among those more interested in pure accuracy and not concerned with weight.
