so from what ive read it sounds like you can register a sawed off shotgun and own one without needing a ffl is that right or not, also does anyone know the laws in washington state regarding sawed off shotguns?

I'm not sure about the state laws, but yes, a sawed off shotgun can be legal.

It has to be registered through the NFA as a Short Barrel Shotgun, which requires a $200 tax stamp to register the creation or transfer of one. The tax stamp should be IN HAND prior to making/acquiring the shotgun however.

You'll be able to get a LOT more information down in the NFA subforum.

A "sawed off shotgun" is actually considered a "weapon made from a shotgun" under the National Firearms Act that is less than 25" overall or with a barrel length of less than 18.

Washington state currently prohibits possession of such a weapon in the state. You can, however, own an "Any Other Weapon" which can also be made from a shotgun. But in this case, the shotgun has to have been shipped from the factory with NO STOCK. So the Mossberg 500 Cruiser is the basis for a lot of AOWs since Mossberg ships them with just a pistol grip.

If you are confused, welcome to the club.

As N003k pointed out, you can make your own on a Form 1 or buy one on a Form 4. In either case, the process requires certain paperwork (what a surprise, eh?) and a $200 tax to make one or $5 tax to transfer one.

You do not need any sort of FFL to buy or make an AOW. You DO have to submit the paperwork as I already said, but if you are legally allowed to own a handgun, you shouldn't have any problem with the ATF NFA process. Just be sure that you can own one in your area. State law may allow ownership, but county and municipal ordinances may preclude it.

Don't believe so in WA if I read this right.

RCW 9.41.190
Unlawful firearms — Exceptions.

(1) It is unlawful for any person to manufacture, own, buy, sell, loan, furnish, transport, or have in possession or under control, any machine gun, short-barreled shotgun, or short-barreled rifle; or any part designed and intended solely and exclusively for use in a machine gun, short-barreled shotgun, or short-barreled rifle, or in converting a weapon into a machine gun, short-barreled shotgun, or short-barreled rifle; or to assemble or repair any machine gun, short-barreled shotgun, or short-barreled rifle.

In the state of Washington...

WA laws only allows the civilian ownership of two types of NFA (Title 2) firearms.
Any Other Weapons and Noise Suppressors.

Destructive Devices, Machine Guns, Short Barrel Rifles and Short Barrel Shotguns are not legal for non-exempt persons.
