Hi Guys,

I have a small question regarding the effectiveness of VCI capsules.

The story is that I've ordered a Remington Moistureguard 12 gauge VCI capsule to hang it in my gunsafe which is very small. The safe is not airtight by a far margin, it's got 2 holes on the back, 2 on the top and the door is also loose fitting.

What I'm wondering about is if the VCI capsule is still going to be effective, or do they only work in an airtight safe?

Thanks in advance,

Tom

I use a product called Zerust which is a VCI and it protects a radius of 2' for 1 year. According to the instructions, the enclosure need not be airtight. The capsule itself is approximately 2 square inches so you might consider the internal volume of your intended use area and order multiple units based on expected protection capacity. I buy Zerust at my local Lowes home improvement center and have used it in ammo boxes, safes and tool boxes for about 5 years if memory serves.

I cant speak to the VCI capsule, and I am by no means a safe expert, although I own a few RSC's.

If it indeed does work better in a sealed safe, you could easily seal it with silicone to plug the holes and standard door weatherstripping from the hardware store.

Thanks for all the answers! One further question came to my mind, I'm using a heavy grease to protect my guns, is it possible that the VCI vapor would get into some chemical reaction with that grease? Or should they be OK to use together?

Thanks!

I am pretty sure the VCI's are so small they don't care about grease, oil, carbon fouling, etc. The molecules will actually go through all that and cling to the metal surfaces.

I've not witnessed any problems with interaction and I've got firearms covered with everything from Rig +P to CLP to wax.
