Folks, I have a friend who has an SAR-1. He currently uses it with a POSP scope, but was wondering about a good red dot. He doesn't want to buy an EOTECH or aimpoint, but something a little bit less expensive. This is his question - The SAR-1 has a side rail mount, which works great for the POSP. I told him that a lot of folks seem to use an Ultimak mount of some sort, which, I guess installs around the gas tube? This is something that I don't know much about, and was wondering if you all suggested a rear mount of some sort for a red dot scope, fitting onto the existing SAR-1 side rail, or is it worth the extra mullah to spring for the Ultimak mount (how much do these cost, anyway, and do they fit on an SAR-1?) and mount some sort of a red dot scope closer to the muzzle?

Thanks so much in advance for your advice!

I don't have an SAR-1 but I have an Ultimak on my Egyptian Maadi ARM. The Ultimak replaces the gas tube so I don't think there will be any issues mounting it on an SAR-1.

I think it cost around $100-120 from the manufacturer. I like it better than the receiver cover mounts because it is more sturdy. Also, when using the Aimpoint (shown: Comp M-XD) with the stock 30mm ring (NOT shown - the above is the Aimpoint Rail Grabber), it co-witnesses with the iron sights without further need for modification.

The Russian Kobra red dot sight is a great unit. 4 reticles, and built VERY strong. It's pretty much the equal of our higher priced American military optics, but costs a lot less. $200-250 or so. It fits the side rail or you can get a Weaver version for the Ultimak. I've had one for several years and I'm really sold on it.

I have two Ultimak-equipped AKs and four with side rail mounted magnified or red dot optics over the dust cover.

For a red dot, I'd really quite partial to the Ultimak mount system. It's unobtrusive, doesn't impact weapon carryin' or such, and is absolutely rock solid. It's also no more expensive than most of the decent (low-flex) side rail mounting setups. You can find side rail mounts that are pretty stout, but they're all fairly pricey, are still not as stable as the Ultimak, and they tend to interfere with carryin' the rifle by the receiver (as I'm known to do in the brush when I don't want to be slung up).
