I purchased a used 220 and then a spring kit which included green and red recoil springs. The green was longer, the red shorter than the spring in the gun. I put in the green one, assuming the old spring had compressed. Is this correct? Also, does the green end go towards the muzzle? Thanks from a new Sig owner.

Coyote3855, the P220 standard length models use the green spring and the P220 Carry models use the red spring. The P220 Combat uses a black phosphated spring. The orientation of the recoil spring isn't important. Enjoy your new SIG ... they're great pistols.

1858, Thank you for the response. I like the 220 a great deal, and recently purchased its little brother, a p225.

That's how I did it. A P220 first back in '93 followed by a P225 in '95. Then I added four more P220s, another P225 and a P239. :D

The green spring is the correct one for a full sized SIG 220. If the spring kit you purchased was the factory set (multiple wires wound/twisted around each other) there should be a tighter end. The tight end should be placed onto the recoil rod first. The larger end goes into the slide

Many of the newer factory springs seem to have the same I.D. at both ends. My P220 Carry, Combat and P239 springs are like that. However, I agree that if one end is tighter than the other, it's best to put that end over the guide rod. As the spring wears it will become less obvious and less important as to which way the spring is orientated.
