In the event that anyone is interested in pursuing a Darwin Award, I will augment it with $100 for the first person who can blow up an unaltered, CIP-Proofed cap & ball revolver using Black Powder of FFFg, or coarser, quality and a projectile that fits the chamber and is less than 12 BHN.
Actually I sent the 3 various custom cap n ball boolits I made, one of which weighs 285 grns with a WFN and very wide driving bands that I created specifically for my Ruger as I know it can handle higher pressures. I did this to help increase the velocity as it takes up a fair bit of capacity.
A fellow used it in his ASM Walker with 52 grns of Pyrodex P and it blew his cylinder.

J-bar,
That's what I've read as well. The ROA is what it is and it's a VERY GOOD (the best) one at that. I believe it is probably the most versatile S.A. that Ruger has ever produced!
(More on that later)

It seemed to meet every requirement, though I'd have to assume it was CIP proofed as I know next to nothing about ASM other than they were well known for quality issues. I'm guessing that's what disqualified it from your requirements? My cast boolits are from lead pipe and about 5 BHN.
Of course there's nothing difinitive to prove what made it let go. Quality, 3rd owner so no telling how it was used or cleaned, and a heavy projectile meant to increase pressures with a stout charge of P, which isn't the most energetic, but is far from the weakest. Maybe it was more than one...
Many felt it looked as though he used smokeless, but I honestly doubt he did so as he seems well versed in their use and owns several.
A lot of thought went into why those Walkers were being brought back with the cylinders blown. Some of it was metallurgy but most of it was the soldiers, inexperienced with that revolver, loading the chambers full and then seating the picket bullets backwards into the chamber. As the Goon noted with his, I also have no qualms about loading each chamber with 60 grains and a round ball on my modern Walker replica.
