A .357 lever rifle is versatile, cheap to load for and shoot, and fun. You can load it with light .38s for a pop and kick barely more noticeable than a .22, but that will take out a bunny or other small game very solidly, on up to very credible deer loads that will cover any conceivable need out to 100yds or so that still don’t kick hard. Myself, I need a scope out past about 50yds, but that’s partly vision (astigmatism). I wouldn’t hesitate if a quality rifle comes along. I got my Marlin 1894 by keeping interest in one in the back of my mind and jumping on it when I saw one in a shop. Had some finish wear, but was slick and felt good, and wasn’t expensive (a few years ago) due to the metal and wood wear from use. I’ll travel with it, hike and woods bum with it, and not feel bad if another scratch comes along. It’s a great little tool.
