What are the differences between the S&W 17 and 18?

I think the serial number was 224NXX or 228NXX, when was it made? It was definitely a 18-4 though.

It has a 4" barrel. Would there be an mechanical issues with less accuracy than one with a 6" barrel? Or am I merely looking at lost velocity?

Anything else I need to look out for? The lock-up is very tight and the bluing is nice.

The 18 was just the .22 cal. version of the Model 15 Combat Masterpiece; which is to say just a Model 17 with 4" barrel ramp front sight. Absolutely one of the best .22 revolvers ever made and a keeper. Mine is an 18-2 from about 1982 and I like it better every day.

Accuracywise or any other wise you will not notice the difference between the two barrel lengths. If anything you will find the shorter barrel easier to shoot as the years roll on, and certainly much easier to pack.

Shoot it as much as you can and then pass it on to one or two more generations.
