quick question RCBS decapping pin

I just got my brand new 223 RCBS FL set in from cabelas.
On the first piece of brass I broke my decapping pin.
I am at their website to reorder some in, but there are two sizes listed.

The one I took out was threaded onto the bottom of the shaft by a long collar/sleeve. It does have a head on it like a finish nail.

The website lists:
1. Headed
2. Small
3. Large

I am guessing I need a headed pin . . . anyone know for sure?
My die set is #11103

Take yours apart and look at it?

How in the world did you break one on the first ........

Nevermind, I know how.

Next time, leave the lock-nut loose until you get the case in the die all the way.

Then screw it in while feeling around for the flash-hole the pin has to center in.

Keep going until the primer pops out, then give it another 1/2 turn.

Only then, lock down the lock-nut with the pin still in the flash hole.

That will center it so it won't hit off-center and break the next time.

BTW: You didn't try to size a Berdan primed case did you?

Just call RCBS and tell them what happened and they will send you some for free.

Check the entire decapping shaft

Rookie -

Check that central pin assembly !!!

I also have a set of RCBS 223 dies and they gave me fits. If you withdraw the de-capping pin assembly and roll it on a table top, you may see that the pin is not concentric with the rest of the assembly.

After very close inspection of the pin, cap and shaft I discovered that there was a small burr inside the cap that keeps the pin from seating concentric with the shaft. This makes the pin aim off into space and not hit the flash hole in the bottom of the very tiny 223 case.

This may be why your pin broke. And as such, the broken pin is not the problem, it's a symptom of the problem. Replacing the pin may only result in another broken pin.

You may wish to check this.

I believe lyman and rcbs headed pins are the same.I use lees decaping die on the bonanza.as the next step for me is cleaning cases.

My Lyman and RCBS pins are different sizes and won't interchange. The Lyman uses a smaller diameter pin than the RCBS.

yes I did the same thing, well not on the first case, but I did break a pin on a 223 case, that was full of crap.my fault.
I have lyman pins,i thought would work,NOT,,,
all i did was email RCBS. and told them, i need more..and why did u change the pin design,
in a pinch,i pulled the insides of my 221 fireball and that worked untill i got at no charge to me, new pins,,,,from RCBS,,

SO CALL OR EMAIL RCBS free is free,, good company,,I know Lyman wouldnt send free pins,,I know I called them,

I broke the decapping pin in my 7-30 dies on about the 3rd piece of brass. At least Redding dies give you a spare of course I have yet to break one of them.

I used to break about 1 decapping pin per 100 brass. I tell you the Lee decapping die is the best way to go. I've never broken one of those.
