I posted this already on a Rock River Arms forum, but thought you guys might find it interesting as well. Although I have 16" ARs, I wanted to find a 20" for a little more serious target work. Something I'd want to put a real scope on and something I could actually see the bull with. :)

A couple of weeks ago I snagged a 20" barreled factory stock Rock River Arms "Coyote" rifle, with the factory 2-stage match trigger group.... about 2 days before the present AR insanity started. The rifle has a standard chrome moly heavy barrel with 1:9 rifling. It has a Wylde chamber that can be used with either .223 Rem or 5.56 NATO. The barrel is free-floated, with Hogue forend and grip. I mounted a Leupold Mark AR 3-9X scope on a Leupold base, and today was my first range day with it. Before heading out, I bore-sighted the scope using a small light about 50 yards away. I put the rifle in a vise, found the light and aligned the bore and the scope reticle. that got me very close, so final sighting in at the range was simple.

To say I'm not only surprised but impressed, would be an understatement. After a few rounds zeroing the scope at 100 yards, I proceeded to put 80 rounds down-range. 1/2" to 3/4" groups were the norm.... and the RRA match trigger is every bit as nice as the Geissele SSA-E triggers I've put in my other ARs. This is a really nice shooting rifle, right out of the box. No malfunctions, no problems. The Leupold is a perfect match for the rifle, though I wish I had the higher powered scope. The 3-9 is just fine though, and I have no complaints. Leupold makes a fine scope no matter which one you buy.

I have no reservations recommending this rifle to anyone. For a bit of context, I've been around firearms my whole life, I'm a handloader since the 60s, a life member of the NRA since the early 70s, and a retired Naval Aviator. I'm not new to shooting. After shooting this one, it's going to be a bit harder to go back to some of my less accurate, blue steel and walnut hunting rifles! Now I understand why people want to free float their AR barrels, and it seems I've caught the "black rifle disease".

If I can answer any questions about this rifle, let me know and I'll try. Here it is:

Nice set-up, RainDodger. When not competing in Service Rifle matches, I take the "handle" off my RRA model NM A4 target rifle, put a Burris 3X9 scope using Weaver QD mount/rings and go after the local woodchucks with it. The s/s barrel on my National Match rifle is 20" long and has a 1:8 rate of twist. My rifle also has the "Wylde" chamber and the superb NM 2-stage trigger. Like you, I have found the RRA rifle to be very accurate, reliable and well-finished. And, as you said, the trigger has as nice of a trigger pull as anything else out there that I've tried (including the popular Jewell and Timney after-market units; though I've never pulled the trigger on a Geissele).

I assume that you are using your rifle for hunting varmints. Coyotes? What loads are you using?

Awesome review. I agree about RRA products. I had always avoided them until a year or so ago. My brother bought a 24" Predator. After shooting it I was impressed. Two weeks ago he called me wanting to get rid of it. He was spooked by the shooting and such. He offered to trade me for a Rem 700 I had, so I obliged him. Needless to say, I could not be happier. It is a great accurate rifle.

Terrific gun and great picture. I have the same thing with an EOTech 552 in place of the scope as a home defense weapon. Sometimes coyotes walk on two legs.

Seems like the norm for RRA heavy barreld rifles. I sat around a range early one morning watch 2 guys ,both shooting 24" varments with only a match trigger upgrade and 32 power scopes shoot .300 average groups with handloads and some lake city match ammo was there base load shot .380 avaerages. Fine shooters

It needs a bigger trigger guard but other than that very nice;-)

Winters get cold in the Great Northwest. Need clearance for gloves.

In Vermont, we take those trigger guards and stretch them even further. Layered glove, ya know?

thanks for the report. i'm awaiting the arrival of a 20" predator pursuit i ordered not too long ago. i expect it to be the "bees knees" for coyotes.

Very nice RRA. I have a 20" RRA with the same trigger, with a Springfield 4-14x40 scope. The trigger Is special, for sure.
