Quick SKS Question

Yeah the 30rounders suck. I have quite a few of these fine rifles and I would recommend them to anybody. Especially as a first or second hell even third rifle. I can never have enough of them it seems. The 20rd mounted box type are great I have 2 and I have never had a problem out of them. The standard 10rd mags are really easy to find so don't let the 30 rd detachable keep you from buying it. Just make sure bubba didn't break it. Be sure to inspect it throughly as you should always do when purchasing a new firearm.

@Ignition :

I have seen wooden sks stocks sell for about 30 bucks in local stores . It is harder to find the upper hand guard it seems. It doesn't take a gunsmith to install all you have to do is remove the trigger group. It is amazingly simple.

My SKS origins

Hello,

All 3 of my SKSs are Chinese Norinco made, (bought back in the days when they could be had for 99-110 bucks apiece). I've heard that the Yugos are really well built, but I've never fired one. For price, utility and value (bang for your buck) I think the SKS is still a bargain. I've shot all sorts of cheap ammo through my SKS paratrooper. The full jacketed surplus are fun at the range. For deer I've had good luck with the Wolf HP rounds, but I limit myself to taking shots at no longer than around 100 yards. Do I think I'd make a longer shot? Heck yes, but I also keep in mind the limitations of both the carbine the ammo, and my aging eyes, and think a scope on a SKS is a waste of time and money. I pretty much treat it more or less like a 30-30 . Though I've read about the Russians and Yugos being better quality SKSs, I cannot complain about my Chinese ones. ..... just buy one, they're fun! And just maybe buy one for your wife.......:D
Take care all.

Pasteurized/UberAmerican:

On another website (TheFiringLine) I beat a dead horse asking about corrosive Yugo ammo versus non-c. Wolf in my Mini 30, which I just picked up.

Somebody said that Yugo x39 ammo's corrosion in gas tubes/pistons might have damaged Yugo SKS rifles. If they are now quite reliable, then the damage was repaired/parts replaced, or were never fired very often or many rounds before storage etc?
I would imagine that corrosive ammo was very common in all Warsaw Pact and even PRC Chinese inventories many years ago. If so, this was a very common denominator.

My wife studied "Voice" up into mid-PHD level (and is petite). If she ever knocked herself on the head, and suddenly wanted to shoot a rifle, it would be with my ancient Savage .22.
Meanwhile, must save secret cash for an SKS.

I had 2 for a while. 1 came with the sks I bought used from a local shop, the other I got when my dad passed with all his gun stuff.Both mine worked fine, but I didnt really care for the look of that long mag under an sks, had an AK clone, so it didnt fulfill any real need, and mad shooting from a bench a pain with the long mag.Eventually sold that sks when I inherited my super mint 1954 russian Izzy sks, and Norinco sks-m that took AK mags, so when the gun went, I sold the mags here.I seem to have had the 2 exceptions to to rule though, as 99% of the people who've tried them had problems.I think both mine were USA mags too, which has a pretty bad rep., so guess I had the only 2 they made that worked.:D
No idea how they worked for whoever bough 1 from here and 1 on gunbroker.They never contacted me to complain, so I'm guessing they worked for them too.

Yep, most of the older Eastern Block ammo is corrosive, but the SKS is so simple and quick to break down and give a quick cleaning to that I've never concerned myself as to wether ammo is corrosive or not.. I just clean'em at the end of the day (an honestly 10 minute job) no matter what sort of ammo I fire.
keep yer powder dry!
