I got to shoot a biathalon style straight pull Ruger-pattern gun (I think the only Ruger made parts were the magazines). It had a Yankee Hill 16" integral barrel. I thought that was quiet until I got a chance to shoot a Savage with an 18-20" integral that was so quiet I first thought it was misfiring! I was told that barrel was only available as a package.

What are my options for a very quiet 10/22 barrel? I really like the biathalon bolt.

I've done some research and figured out why the Savage MkII/Thompson Machine is so darn quiet. It was a 21" barrel 1.000" in dia. It seems everyone, including Thompson Machine, makes 0.920" barrels for the 10/22 platform. 16-17" long also seems to be the trend for the 10/22.

1.000" is 18% more volume that 0.920" per inch, before taking into account wall thickness and barrel thickness. I would not be surprised it it was 30% more actual space for baffles. Add to that a 30% longer barrel, and we are looking at almost 70% more volume on the savage platform.

It looks like Norrell's integral is 1.000" diameter and he will do custom lengths. Does anyone know how quiet?
