Wow you Illinois guys have a more messed up state than I knew (and I knew it was bad). Deepest sympathy!

I didn't realize that the waiting period applied to private transactions. How does this apply to firearms as gifts among family members? What if someone from another state sells to someone in Illinois? I have in-laws in Illinois and this information may prove useful. Thanks.
An interstate transfer requires an FFL anyway.

There is no exception for gifts.

Thanks for the reply.

An interstate transfer requires an ffl only if it is being shipped (in other free states anyway). In other words I can purchase a firearm from any private person in a neighboring state completely legally.

Am I wrong? Is this not true in Illinois? How on earth do they think this can be enforced?

you cannot purchase a firearm interstate at all from a private party w/o an FFL being involved.

most states allow you to purchase a long gun from an out of state FFL.

you cannot buy a handgun out of state at all.

I'll be darned. So if my brother in law lives in Illinois, I couldn't give him a firearm from my collection (purchased in my state) as a gift without going through an FFL?

Darned ridiculous. Not that I want to give my no good brother in law any of my guns anyway. :)

Seller and buyer both need to reside in the same state, otherwise an FFL needs to make the transfer.
