Last week’s Virginia Register contained the final publication of Radford University’s campus weapons ban. This may seem rather sudden to those familiar with the rather long and complex ‘notice and comment’ process by which most regulations are promulgated in Virginia. After all, the regulation was only first voted on by the Radford University Board of Visitors on Friday September 14th.

However, thanks to the ill-advised fast-track regulatory power granted to state-operated colleges and universities by § 2.2-4002(A)(6), the regulation becomes effective immediately upon publication without any public notice or comment period as would normally be the case with regulatory rulemaking.

It is with great sadness that I noted the final regulation bans not only firearms but also ...

"VCU sees huge increase in crime "

It's okay now, they arrested the guys, so you can drop the grossly exaggerated headline. The crimes weren't on campus and the perps weren't students iirc.

Oct 18, 2012 – Police have arrested four people they believe were involved in three armed robberies Tuesday night in Richmond near VCU's main academic ...

Heck, VCU probably has a dorm bigger than the town of Radford. :) Okay, I chekced, I see Radford grew to 16k people while I was away.

Sad that they would rather see their own students assaulted, raped or murdered; than for them to dare have the hope of effective self defense.

I suggest a letter writing campaign by students and alumni congratulating the university on allowing crime, robbery, rape and murder on their campus. Since such activities are frowned on in most communities, it is the true sign of a progressive and forward-thinking administration to want them to continue without hindrance at your school.

Virgina Tech passed a campus wide firearm ban not long before the campus shooting in 2007.

Not many campuses allow concealed carry on their grounds. Where I went to university doesn't allow carry but I did anyway. Never really felt the need to since campus crime where I went is non existent compared to the outside.

Right, plus with the "huge crime increase," violent crime was still lower than the previous year, LOL. So crime was actually down and the crimes weren't even on campus.
