So while fantasizing about owning a S&W 325 Thunder Ranch over here in this thread I got to thinking of how I might use (or not) the light rail.

Has anyone put one of the rail adapters intended for semi-autos on a 325 or any of the other rare breed of revolvers that have an under-barrel picatinny rail? I have stumbled upon this page reviewing the various adapter options before. In theory, I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't work.

I'm aware that some of you guys will curse the very notion of slapping a bunch of "tacticool" ridiculousness on a perfectly good wheel gun. I sympathize. But the "weird" lover in me just wants to see if it's doable.

Well, no replies yet. I have cheap Osprey mount from Midway, but not a revolver with an under-rail, just a pistol. I think a scope mount is functional, not tactic-cool and the adapter/mount for the under-rail is functional. The 325 came up on my radar just a few short weeks ago. I thought it looked cool for a 45 acp revolver. Then I saw people complaining about recoil. I wondered why, because it only weighs 7 ounces less than a Python 357 with a 4" barrel; maybe its the center of gravity. So it occurred to me a mount and sight out near the front of the barrel would serve to tame the recoil, and with the wrap-around mount, you can still look under it to use your iron sights. Sounds like a great idea! Did you ever get to try it? I see that you posted something recently about going another direction with your caliber.

Indeed I'm in the process of trying to sell my 325 due to not being able to make a clean enough, light-recoiling enough 45 ACP load for high volume shooting.

Once I got the gun I realized that it was already intended for sight replacements. http://www.jackweigand.com/ has some that seem like they would fit because it's the same rear sight assembly as far as I can tell. It's true that the adapters I was looking at would allow using the iron sights as backup, which is pretty cool, but may not be worth it if it means the scope is that high off the gun.

Anyway I kind of ditched the idea of adapting the light rail once I realized there was such a solid (and reasonably priced) solution available. I would've gone with the small version of the weig-a-tinny and put a small reflex sight on it if I was sticking with the gun.

The long story short is that any modern S&W revolver seems perfectly capable of being "scoped" or "reflexed" and without a lot of cost or effort, as long as you don't need to be able to hot-swap back to your iron sights.

As for why it recoils so much, I'm not sure. Maybe it doesn't. I had mentioned in the other thread that I think I'm recoil sensitive in this particular way. I had a P-64, which is a blowback 9x18mm that's pretty heavy as far as guns that size go, and it was *brutal*, but my S&W Shield, which is lighter and fires a more powerful round (9x19) is totally comfortable. It could be grip design as much as anything, and/or my hand. It hurts me in a very specific spot just inside the web between thumb and forefinger.
