Was at the range on sunday with some friends. Their was about 10 pepole there shoting. Some sighting in scopes on the 50 yd berm 3 or 4 on the 100 yd berm and others on the pistol side. I was on the 100yrd line with a good friend sighting in his new scope on the 22lr. ON A HOT RANGE I ADD. I was standing at the table reloading my 9mm mags when my friend to my left says, "uh.........CLEAR!!!!!!!!" I look up to see a older man with what looked to be his grandson had toke a strole from the line down range on the 100 yd side to put up targets!!!!!!!!. They were at lest 8 to 10 feet down range and all they did when they heard him shout clear was turn to look back!!!!!!After talking with my friend he tells me that he just happend to get a flash of movement in his left eye befor he took his shot. :cuss: :fire: We tried to keep the remarks to areself but what idiot trots off down range without checking to see if the range is clear or hot!!!!!:fire: :what: :what:

I was at the range one day before deer season. And these ROUGH, i mean rough looking characters were there sighting in there rifles. One guy carried the target down range to hang the target up. I was getting my stuff out, and heard him hollar back up to the other guys, "All Right Blast Away". He was just standing off to the side while they were shooting, he would walk over, look at the target and say, "Your Getting Closer". I was just standing there in Awe. Could not believe this idiot. I am very safety minded with my guns, i was figuring i would have to grab my cell phone and call for an ambulance any minute. Be Smart, If not for your own safety, for the safety of others!!!

I see that at the range every once in a while. I liken it to be like the pedestrian always have the right of way like while in traffic and clear and clear my side of the line for safety's sake.

They may be stupid idiots but you can't step on the gas just cause they jaywalk in traffic.

There is one small problem with your analogy….. Bullets don’t have breaks!

whats is odd is that there was a person that got ran over yesterday behind where i work :uhoh:

I believe that when "clear" or "hot" is called out that EVERYONE is to loudly repeat it until it is confirmed to be recognized by all who are there. Did all of those around you acknowledge and double check to make sure? Based on your description was that bychance Owl Hollow? Did you report the buffoons to the owners. There aren't a lot of places to shoot around here-losing one more due to the sheer idiocy of one of these morons would be doubly sad. Yo folks- please report safety indescretions of all kinds to the rangemaster or other proper authority-the media would love to report anything adverse that might happen at a gun range.

At this range thers is not anyone to report to, no rangemaster or RO, there is no governing body located onsite at this range at all. It is located on TWRA land and managed by TWRA but they do not put anyone there to monitor the shooters. I wish they would though. Yes the clear or hot signals are repeted by everyone to make sure that it is ether truly clear or hot.

"...Well yeah, but thats the dufesses(sic) problem. I'll brake if I can but if he darts into traffic before I see him..." You'd still be responsible if anything were to happen. At least, because the TWRA, whoever that is, is negligent in not having an RSO on the range, you'd have somebody to sue as well. After you serve your manslaughter sentence. That range sounds like an accident waiting to happen. No RSO, no control over what goes on there or who shoots there. Geezuz.

I was at the combat range(doesn't have a "line", and is used for close chooting) w/ 4 buddies on friday afternoon......we had 5 targets set up and some guy I never saw before comes up and asks if anyone's using the last target.....I say yeah, but you're welcome to join us.....we call clear and he sets up a silloette(which is what we were shooting so no biggie).we commence to shooting and then call clear again and go to check our targets...this is when it gets weird....he looks at his target and says"well Habib's dead."...............I go"HUH".he goes"yeah,I just killed a muslim"......now he doesn't know me from Mohammad so I'm in awe at this guys attitude...and he was kind of quick drawing and being a little "excitable".....then he starts talking about shooting people and how he'd never carry a 1911 c&l ed and how he's "ready"..for something.......made us all a little un easy......he left after a half hour...but I was thinking of asking him to leave.....he was a member of the club, but I think he was a nut........next time I only shoot w/ people I know....BTW I left my CCW in my holster the whole time and just shot my other guns....always have a loaded gun on you even at the range..;)

I was fortunate enough to be invited to a private range along with a few of the owners friends. Unfortunately one of the friends also brought along a family member who ended up being one of the Don't-Bother-Me-I-Know-All-There-Is-To-Know-About-Guns type. This genius kept trying to walk downrange while we were still hot, even after repeated requests not to do so. The range owner got a really wicked look in his eye and proceeded to set up his brand new Barrett M95 right next to the guy. The next time this dimwit decided to take a stroll downrange, he got about one step out from the shooting bench when he suddenly found himself the recipient of a face full of .50BMG muzzle blast straight out of the side of the big Barrett's muzzle brake.

No more problem.

A similar thing happened this summer at the range where I shoot. A group of five once a year shooters show up while I am setting up on one of the benches. After a few mins they all up and head downrange without makeing sure I was clear of the bench. I pointed this matter out to them and one of told me that I had attitude. After we got back I told them that you need to all be behind the line before a clear is called and everyone on the range needs to know that a clear has been called. I added that if they thought I had attitude I'd be happy to get the range master so they could tell him the same thing. Their range safety habits were sloppy, they wouldn't get behind the line for a clear unless the RSO was present. The RSO told me that a couple of them went down to the 25 yard sight in benches and made a nuisance of themselves there as well.

SD's (Stupidity Discharges) just waiting to happen.

... face full of .50BMG muzzle blast straight out of the side of the big Barrett's muzzle brake.
I'm just picturing a fully grown man being thrown sideways onto the dirt from this...

and now the keyboard, monitor, and wall are soaked with cider. :D

Take a camcorder next time, will ya?

Okay, here ya go.

I got invited to a private range for some shooting. I brought an AR-15 and a single action revolver in .357 for some casual plinking.

Turns out the "shooting" I'd been invited to was precision rifles, off benches at three rows of smaller and smaller clay targets taped to a board at 300 yards. So much for my AR and single action revolver.

Now that was the cool part.

The "uncool" part was the fact that everyone, except me, was swilling beer after beer as they popped away at these clay targets at 300 yards.

They had all sorts of rules as to when who could shoot which target and who "won" each round, and showed otherwise safe habits, but they were all drinking beer after beer, and had coolers full of beer in the backs of pickup trucks.

I waited until the first round of competition was over, and then excused myself and left.

I had to wait, because the only entrance and exit to the range area was downrange........away from the target area by several degrees and at least 200 yards, but still downrage of folks drinking beer and handling bolt action centerfire rifles.

Even though I love precision shooting, I've never been back.

I did not make a big scene out of it because I was on private property as an invited guest. But I will never go back.

It blew my mind to see rifles and beer so casually mixed by otherwise knowledgable folks. They talked load data like experts. They had clearly spent several hundred hours and several thousand dollars developing their private range. But they thought it was okay to get hammered while shooting high powered rifles.

You'd still be responsible if anything were to happen.

Yeah, that's a given. But the point was that even being as careful as possible, that pedestrians have to look before they leap. You don't run out into traffic just because you know that the autos have a greater duty of care, and that they'd be responsible legally if anything bad happened, I mean, come on...

I'm proud of the fact that I've never shot anyone or ran anyone over. With all the lawyeritis and welfare state mentality its a wonder that stuff like that don't happen more often.
