Hi there,
I've been a lurker for a long time, so I figure I'll try to give back to the community a bit in the form of some range reports. Please bear with me; if anyone has any recommendations about how to make these more effective, please tell me.
I recently bought a Glock 19 in a moment of weakness. I've been curious about the Glocks for a year or so, but I never had the nerve to give them a try before. My first shooting session with the G19 was less than pleasing; apparently the 2183-1 magazine follower is more or less defective - it has an extremely difficult time chambering flat-nosed ammunition. I actually learned that from this site, which is once again a testament to how effective this internet medium is. The gunshop commandos were insisting that I was limp-wristing. Hah.
In any case, last week I bought two pre-ban magazines and took the Glock out to run it through it's paces. Here are the results, I've broken it down into pros, cons, and a conclusion. I've also included a picture of my 20-yard target. The shooting session was shot with 115gr Magtech 9mm from a weaver stance, unsupported.
Pros:
1.) The Glock 19 is actually a very accurate weapon. At 7 yards, it wasn't uncommon to have groups of an inch or less. More often, I'd estimate my average 7 yard groups to be about 1.5 inches. Despite the unnatural trigger, it was easy to place rounds on target with this gun. I actually shot the Glock better than I usually shoot my P228, a gun with a good reputation for accuracy.
2.) This weapon can be shot accurately very rapidly. A combination of the low-bore axis, short trigger reset, and other variables I'm probably not aware of make it extremely easy to land multiple rounds on target quickly with this gun.
3.) The gun is very quick on the draw. My wife timed my draws with my P228 and the G19. On average, the G19 was about 1/2 a second faster than the P228 to fire the first shot. Accuracy for these draws was comparable between the two weapons. However, some consideration must be given to the fact that I'm rather out of practice, and I'm sure practice could make a double-action draw faster.
Cons:
1.) The biggest negative to me is the grip angle of the G19. It isn't natural for my hands. When I close my eyes, bring the weapon on target, and check my sight alignment, the gun is always canted considerably upward. Muscle memory developed through practice could change this I'm sure, but the grip angle is not as natural as my P228 or P99 nonetheless.
2.) The stock sights are low quality. Any suggestions on what to replace them with?
3.) The trigger has a spongy, unnatural feel. I suspect one of the reasons I did well with the Glock is that I'm still relatively new to pistol-shooting. I can easily see how someone who has been conditioned on weapons such as 1911s and Sigs could have a difficult time adjusting to the Glock trigger.
Conclusion:
If you can adjust to the trigger, the Glock 19 is, in my opinion, one of the best CCW weapons available. 15+1 rounds of 9mm in a very lightweight, relatively small package that is accurate, fast on the draw, and easy to make follow-up shots with make this gun a definite winner. Additionally, any notions that the Glock 19 is inaccurate compared to other weapons of comparable size is simply untrue. I as well with the Glock as I usually do with my P228, and once I've confirmed that the G19 is indeed reliable by putting a few more hundred rounds through it, I'll consider making it my CCW weapon.
