Ok, somebody issued a "challenge" on the board a while ago to get 5 women out to the range within a a month. I managed to get one of my little cousins (22, female) and her roomate (23, female) out to the range Sunday.
Neither had ever shot a firearm before -- which is really weird considering my cousin's father is a hunting fanatic.
Ok, so I don't own a .22 handgun or rifle. I'm a very bad person, I know. So, for a rifle I used my AR-15. It's loud, but docile. The little cousin was up first, and was a bit hesitant because of the noise but had a bit of a grin on her face after 5 rounds. She assured the roomate that it didn't hurt and it was kinda fun.
Oh, about the noise -- both of them had on good earmuffs. I went with the crappy foam plugs
They had a little fun going back and forth with that for a bit, and then I showed 'em how the AK-47 works. They didn't like it. I think it was the extra noise really. Oh, and the roomate noticed immediately that there's some trigger slap there. She also noticed that the Wolf ammo smelled funny.
Ok, so the AK was out the door. Too loud and ugly it would seem. Shoulda brought the .410 shotgun I guess.
Off to the handgun -- CZ-75B in 9mm. Surprised me to no end here. Huge grins right away from both of them! Recoil didn't phase them in the least bit -- they actually thought it was kinda NEAT that it jumped up a little! I'm totally confused at this point. The cousin had a little trouble with this event -- just didn't seem to get comfortable holding onto it. I tried demonstrating a proper Weaver stance but she wasn't exactly "getting it" I guess.
The roomate, after getting a proper grip, drops into a perfect isoceles stance and fires off 5 rounds. Into a 4" hole at 10 yards.
So.. .she notices that Wolf ammo smells funny, the AK-47 has trigger slap (need to fix that BTW), and does a 4" group at 10 yards her first time with a handgun -- THEN starts asking about how much a handgun costs and that everybody tells her she needs a hobby of some kind.
I'm telling ya -- it took every ounce of my will left in me not to drop to a knee and ask her to marry me right there.
They said it was fun -- I'm sure we'll be doing it again.
