Today, I went to the range with two magnum revolvers. I had made up some fine hand loads for them.

The guns were my 3” Ruger SP-101 in 357 Mag and my 7-1/2” Ruger Redhawk in 44 Mag.

I first shot the SP with some wadcutter handloads; they were easy to shoot, but their accuracy was disappointing. That’s part of handloading, I guess.

To round things out for that gun, I also shot two cylinders full of full-on magnums. A full load of H110 with 125 gr. SJHP. Wow! I forgot how dramatic that is from a 3” steel revolver: big flash, deep boom, and a sore trigger finger, from being thumped with the trigger guard under recoil. Despite that serious recoil, the shots hit home with better accuracy than the wadcutters. Nice clean holes in the paper, from the high velocity hollow points. Even with that great accuracy, I could only shoot two cylinders full; my trigger finger couldn’t take more. My lane neighbors in were a young guy and his girl. They were shooting a 22LR AR, some kind of full size 9 mm auto pistol, and a 45 pistol of some kind. With that first Magnum shot, their lane fell silent until I was done with my cylinders. I forgot to warn them. I didn’t remember how bassy a little 357 could be.

It was then time to zero the scope of my 7.5” 44 Mag Redhawk. I got ‘er pretty well dialed in at 25 yards with the light magnum handloads. I had some full-on magnum loads for it. Again, to my surprise, they were even more consistent than the lighter loads. Even though this load had a lot more power behind it, it recoiled less than the little 357, because of the extra weight of the long barreled 44 with scope.

My wife and I had some fun at some dueling games with her S&W M&P 22 Compact. She loves it. When we were done with the 22 targets, I shot them again with the bigger bore guns.

The magnums ruled the show, though.

Kinda funny how ranges can fall silent for a bit after a full-house round is touched off from a magnum handgun. :what: Same thing happened to me on Friday when I broke out the 4.2” Model 69.

I don’t seem to get a rap from the inside of the trigger guard with hard-kicking small DA’s. Instead I seem to get the meat of my trigger finger pinched between the trigger and frame as the gun recoils while I am holding the trigger down. (My SP’s do that to me a lot.) :(

Glad you got to get out and play for a bit :).

Stay safe.

I don't go to a range much, I can shoot out to 500 pretty easy on my own land. Would be farther but there is a hill or forest in the way everywhere. Lol. But just for fun back when some of my friends were still around we would go to an indoor range. Nice place but under the Gunstore in the ground. Low ceiling. Magnums were about too much. When I shot to get my ccw permit there was an older woman (well id guess 50.. not old to me now but back then it was lol. ) who was using a short barrel 357 maximum and it was pretty intense. She was also in the first lane so had a wall beside her. When I bought the first 460 xvr any of them had seen I let them shoot it down there and it was just too much. Granted the 460 xvr is stupid loud. Id used 44 amd 454 for many years when I got the 460.

Despite that serious recoil, the shots hit home with better accuracy than the wadcutters.
I am finding out that stronger .38 Special loads are quite a bit more accurate than soft WC loads. Many people have said to go light on WC, but then others say too heavy loads will blow the skirt off. And another suggestion is to go up to 2.9 or 3.0 grns. of Bullseye for .38 WC. Not down but up around 750 to 800 fps. to improve those groups.
Another thread suggests 158 is a much better target load for .357 mag. Try a 158 grn. SWC and build a ladder test. .357 Mags. have a better twist rate for bigger bullets. Oh darn, back to the range again!

Only might blow the skirt off HBWC not DEWC. I like the 158gr SWC loads for everything from light target loads to hot loads.

I shoot my .357mag hot loads in a Smith Mod 28, 4in. I would NOT shoot any hot .357mag loads of any weight bullet in any small handgun (sp-101, j-frame,
Taurus 605, etc.) I did shoot stout .38spl+p loads out of my sp-101 with the 158gr lswc bullets, and found these more controllable and pleasurable.
