Hi there all,

Well, I picked up my new Springfield Champion at the range yesterday and spent the day yesterday looking at it and re-educating myself into the world of the 1911 A1.

I really like it alot and considering I had previously owned a Colt 1991 Commander and Colt 1991 Officers ACP, I thought that I was pretty much buying a hybrid of the two with the 4" bushingless barrel system.

One thing that I will say about the Springfield product is that they are very tight right out of the box! I bought the GI model with plain sights, spur hammer and standard grip/thumb safety. I do like the appearance of it and planned on using it as a "working gun".

I took it to the range today with a couple of boxes of CCI/Speer Lawman 230 grain FMJ and here are my shooting impressions.

1. The champion shoots to point of aim and off hand I managed some 1"-1 1/2" clusters at 15 yards. I haven't shot a 1911 in about 8 months, so I do have to give the Champion a lot of credit.

2. All ejection and feeding were positive and about 99%. I had one last round FTF, but I would expect that with a brand new pistol.

3. Recoil was straight back and there was very little muzzle whip due to the heavy bushingless barrel system.

4. The short trigger and small sights will have to take some getting used to, but right now I want to practice with it as much as possible.

Ask any 1911 afficienado, "what am I going to change?" The grips will be the first and that will be it for the time being.

I am going to invest some money in about 4 extra magazines and a bunch of ammuntion to practice with.

Hi Michael T,

Actually, I was looking at some Hogue Grips yesterday in Dark Walnut and Cocobolo with the double diamond pattern and 20 lpi checkering. My local dealer had them for the same price as shipped from other sources, i.e. www.midwayusa.com

The Springfield did come with the loaded coupon book and I am eyeing their heavily discounted magazines and other accessories. Why pay retail?

I do need to put about 500 practice rounds through the Champion before I start carrying it.
