Range Report: Taurus G2C 9mm

I took my Taurus G2C to the range last weekend and put 200 rounds through it and did not have a single problem. I bought it new in mid to late April and 7 yds center, 5 yds head, 10 rounds each - Copy.jpg nd have put a total of 1,100 rounds thru it so far. It will shoot nearly anything except Winchester USA Forged. Attached is a pic of a target I unloaded on. The head shots were at 5 yards, the body shots were at 7 yards. Using Federal 115gr ball ammo. I loaded 10 rounds each mag and these were my best groupings.
 
Good shooting! They're great guns - I have two, and have never had problems. Priced right, too. Now the prices have gone even lower, but I don't need three...:D
 
I think they are a heck of a deal! I was having troubles with other 9mm's I tried (rental range) primarily with recoil, grip and getting back on target for follow up shots. I love the way the gun feels in my hand, fits perfect. I have friend with a full size 9mm and he's wanting a 9mm compact for CC. He keeps talking about a Glock 19 or 26 but I tried both and found them uncomfortable to shoot. I think if he gets some range time with a G2C he'd like it (but he probably wouldnt admit it).
 
I haven't been too sure about the designation "G2c". I've been assuming it's a variation of the Taurus PT111 Generation 2. If not, please educate me. If so...

My BiL has had one of them for several years now. He carries it whenever off-duty and really likes it. His only complaint has been that the finish doesn't hold up as well as he likes.

I went ahead and bought the stainless slide version to avoid that problem. I paid less than $220. The trigger has a lot of takeup, but is nice and soft after that. I like the sights, it fits my XL hands decently, and the magazine seems well-made. I shoot it accurately for a small pistol. It has been completely reliable for around 150 rounds of mixed ammo.

I was searching for a small double-stack 9mm pistol for OWB carry. In the end, after side-by-side shooting, I prefer my G26 by a little bit. Still, the PT111 G2 seems like a decent little pistol. If I didn't like the G26 better, I would put another 100+ rounds through it and would feel good about carrying it when the weather gets cooler.

The best thing about them is the cheap price. They're mediocre in every other respect. The sights aren't horrible but they're not great. The trigger is not that good either. They're not a joy to shoot or anything, at least not for me. The finish isn't that good and I wish I had spent a few extra bucks to get the stainless slide. Whatever coating they use is already showing signs of wear and I can see the sheen of bare metal starting to show through.

People may say that this is where metal parts rub against each other, but I have a few Glocks with hundreds of rounds through them and they don't show this kind of wear. Yes there is a big price difference between a Glock and a Taurus G2, but just looking at it objectively, the coating on the Taurus is not that good. The edge of the mag release button looks like it either didn't get coated or they did an additional machining operation on it after it was coated and then forgot to re-coat it:

It is kind of weird. As we know there are some guns that come in a full size and a compact version, and usually the letter "c" on the end designates the compact version, but there aren't different sizes of the Taurus Millennium G2 PT111, there is only one size and the Taurus Millennium G2 PT111 was a fairly compact gun already.

They didn't make any major design changes to the gun but supposedly the G2c has a slightly better trigger and is more accurate than last year's Millennium G2 PT111.
 
I think they changed the name for a few reasons. The PT111 G2 had a lifetime warranty while the G2c only has a one year warranty. Legally I am sure it is easier to change the warranty terms if it is a new model. They also are coming out with a single stack G2s to replace the 709 Slim. Adding compact to the name distinguishes the double stack from this single stack version.
 
Oh wow, I didn't know the G2c didn't have a lifetime warranty.

Taurus CS is pretty spotty as is, I don't think I'd buy a Taurus product if it only had a 1 year warranty.

If you hang around the Taurus forum, you'll read stories about the RSAs on these guns breaking, the sights falling off and the trigger dongle breaking. And these accounts are from people who love the gun and are very tolerant and accepting of Taurus.

When I purchased my Millennium G2 PT111, the thought went through my mind that I might have trouble with the gun, and I might have to argue with Taurus to take it back, and I might be without it for months, and they might send it back to me without having fixed it... but the Millennium G2 PT111 was never going to be a primary gun for me, it was just going in a GHB and for $198.00 I was wiling to take that gamble. I was also willing to deal with Taurus for however long it took, if I had a problem.

So far my Millennium G2 PT111 has been fine, but I personally wouldn't purchase a Taurus gun that didn't have a lifetime warranty.
 
To be honest I have a PT 111 G2. My wife had a Taurus model 85 revolver that someone had given her when we met. They are both fine so far. I don't think I will be buying any more Taurus firearms.
 
I have always admired their designs, and they have felt especially good in the hand. But I have read WAY too many horror stories about them to ever actually buy one.
 
I probably would not have bought a Taurus semi-auto due to the alleged poor customer service, but I got it from my LGS who gets most of his guns (including the one I bought) thru Davidson's and I've heard and read good things about their Lifetime Warranty so I'm not overly concerned. I absolutely agree that the finish on the gun is marginal/weak so I'll have to keep it cleaned and oiled. Also, since I'm a relatively new shooter I'm probably a little easier to impress than somebody thats owned a few dozen guns. Maybe one of these days I'll own a S&W. :thumbup:
