good gun shops
The two I frequent are very different, but both fill their niche. the first reflects the interests of the owner. Trap shooter, great deals on AA's., Only place I've ever seen carry a stock of Morgan adjustable recoil pads. A bit standoffish until he found out my wife's mom works for him. Hardware chain store, but locally known for his gun shop. Prices are spotty, some good, most high. Pays a pittance for guns, but sells used cheap. Big down side; since my mom-in-law works there, I have to buy my guns on her day off, or my wife knows about it before I get home!
Second one reopened after closing up the gun shop side, (He sells motorcycles, ATV, and sleds, too.) Has some 'eye candy' guns up on the wall, [AR, FAL, G-3, Benelli , etc.] , a fair selection of hunting guns at good prices, small stock of ammo and cleaing supplies, and lots of good gun shop chatter.
I just bought an M38 Mosin at Fleet Farm, and the guy at the counter was very annoyed that I didn't just take the first one he brought out. Seems I cut into his Bull session. I have dealt other guys to work in Sporting Goods there, and they have been really nice, so maybe he's just a curmudgeon.
The gun I picked was worth the trouble, and the price was not bad. The ammo is cheap there, but you'd better know what you want, I saw a sales guy try to tell a guy .300WSM and .300 RSAUM were interchangeable. I put a stop to that quick!
I used to work at a gun shop that is known statewide (MN) for very knowledgeable help, with kinda high prices. I loved working there, I'd still be there if they paid the help decent. I lived for the *fun* questions people would ask, like "Can you hunt deer with a machine gun?"
My stock reply was, "Why, ya got one?"
Hey, I think that would be a good thread, Stupidest gun shop questions!
