I bought a Smith 620 today. I much prefer SB in K frames. I don't like finger groove or rubber grips either. Has anyone here put SB Smith target grips on their RB gun using some type of "filler piece" to fill the void in the back.

I think we have common taste in grips. I bought a 586 at a very good price a while back, even though it had a RB. I subsequently learned that 586s all came from the factory with the SB and this one was apparently modified (properly, thankfully). I haven't tried what you're thinking about doing, but have had my eye on these beautiful RB to SB conversion grips from Eagle, and will likely go that route.

Those are very nice. Thanks for the link. I've got a few sets of K frame targets, and I think with a little wood insert or wood filler I can make an acceptable grip.

If you can swing $60 + $6 s/h, the Ahrends 'Retro Targets' in cocobolo have a better 'target' feel to me - no finger grooves to fidget with and no checkering to irritate your palm. The slight palm swell and rise at the heel fits my medium+ hands perfectly, both in the N-frame 627 Pro, top below, and the K-frame 617 bottom below (Same size as your L-frame 620!). I ordered the 617's grips unfinished so I could finish them with a penetrating homebrew oil finish, which darkened them a bit. The N-frame grips have Ahrends lacquer-like finish.

Enjoy your new 620.

Here's a couple pics (I have to clean up the gun yet). Thanks for all suggestions. The target grips fit fine except for the back lower of the butt. I need to devise a filler piece there about 1 1/4" long. My woodworking skills are horses**t. I like these grips.
