I saw an ad on the internet for a RCBS-RS reloading press for 30 bucks. Is this a good deal and if so what should i look for as far as wear is concerned, that i should stay away from. I figure from the pics' these things are built like tanks but any insight would be appreciated.

Anytime you can pick up an RCBS Rockchucker press for $30.00, you should jump on it. If it's worn out, you just send it back to RCBS and they will send you a new one.

Hope this helps.

Buy it, friend!

Critical wear is the bore in the cast iron housing through which the ram rides. Linkage points can wear out and must be maintained to preserve stroke and control, but the press will still work if linkage is sloppy. The ram is absolutely critical. It must be aligned with the centerline of the die.

Now, go back and read Fred's post and commit it to memory.

Hmm...I think this is a Reloader Special press which is aluminum as opposed to cast iron. Probably pretty durable still. Like said, look for slop in the ram and alignment of ram and die. I'd look for cracking or distortion in the frame as well. The price is great.

I still use my old cast iron RS press all the time for various duties. Mine has some slop, and I may have it re-sleeved at some point. $30? I see them go for double plus at the auction site.

the Reloader Special press is going for 125.00 and up on the 'net,so if the seller says it's in good or great shape,I'd buy it.

It seems the RS has been aluminum for about the last 20 years. Before that cast iron. Even farther back, the Reloader Special was a package including an RCBS J.R. press and dies.

So I guess an important thing to check will be iron or aluminum.

I bought it

So i bought the press and it is the cast iron version. Everything seems to be tight. Excited to get started. Thanks for your comments
