Hello ...

I have a vintage S&W Model 29-3. Here is the problem: for some reason, I have run out of adjustment on the rear sight, such that there is no room left to screw the sight down any further. The front of the ramp is cocked at a funny angle, and it just looks weird. I am shooting 240 gr. reloads, loaded a step or two under max. Still, I have to aim about a foot low to get the shots on target.

What should I do? Do I need a new rear sight blade? Can the gunsmith do anything? I would like to have this fixed so that the pistol shoots to point of aim. Any advice would be most appreciated.

Thanks,
Gary

Maybe this is a clue? Try removing and re-installing the whole rear sight assembly. If you really want help, post a detailed picture or two and then you can get some good advice. S&W certainly could fix it, but it sounds like someone has monkeyed with the sight, not a defect in the product. Also, a 29-3 was made before the "lifetime warranty" was instituted (presuming you are the original owner).

If you're referring to the front sight as the "front of the ramp", my 8-3/8" 29-3 has the same problem, (with the front sight). My barrel rotated to the left a few degrees so I sent it back to the factory for repair. When it came back it was still off center. The grooves in the top strap are not aligned with those on the barrel rib. It has a great trigger and is extremely accurate but that just looks tacky. I've thought of sending it back and either having a new, (shorter), barrel installed or pinning this one. Still mulling the issue but I haven't shot it in years so no pressure to get it done.

If your problem is just with the rear sight, looking at mine, you should be able to loosen the front ramp screw and reset it.
