Hey guys just got my new flip up yankee hill sights via ups. I got some really dumb questions here.

1. The rear sight has one tiny hole that you can't even hardly see the front sight post through, and one large hole thats so big that I don't understand how you would get any real consistant accuracy. How am I supposed to use these things?

2. Its a gas block mounted front sight. It will only fold towards the end of the barrel. If you try to fold it towards the rear, it won't go all the way down cause it hits the handguard. The rear folds towards the rear making one fold one way and one fold the other. Does this matter? It doesn't seem right.

Thanks for any info, I know these are kinda dumb questions.

The huge sight is for fast target acquisition...close up fast shooting and in low light situations. The little one is for precision shooting. I believe I read that the rifle should be zeroed using the smaller rear sight.

The tightening screws should be on the same side...otherwise you will have to adjust the front sight in the opposite direction from what you would normally adjust it.

-The small hole is used more for precise shooting at longer distances.
-The larger hole is used more for quick shots at close ranges.

-I can't speak for YHM sights because I don't own any, but most folding sights only fold one way so I wouldn't force it.

Is it the one piece gas block folding front sight combo, or is it the add-on picatinny one?

Hope this helps!
-Geoff

The only way the peep should be too small to see the front sight is if you are mounting the rear sight too far forward, or are holding your head way back to the rear on the stock. The rear sight should be mounted in the first rail slot, as close as possible to the shooter's eye. You should turkey neck your head forward until your nose is touching the charging handle (and set the stock at the appropriate length to where you can do this, for whatever type of position you are shooting from).

The rear sight should be very close to your eye. The closer the better. That's how an aperture sight works.

welcome to the world of ghost ring sights and to the understanding of why i hate them

if I fold to the rear I'll hit the handguard. I can't mount it far enough forward on the gas block. I have to turn the whole assembly around so that it flips forward towards the end of the barrel

Brady, the larger aperture is for closer distances, out to 300 yards or meters, I believe. The smaller aperture is for farther distances beyond 300. I think the number is 300.

You may notice that the center of the smaller aperture is set a bit higher than the center of the larger aperture. So, using the smaller aperture allow you to be more precise on targets farther away and it applies some elevation.

As for your problem of hitting the gas block on the handguards, welcome to the world of incompatibilities. You may just have a really short gas block. I don't have that problem with the gas block that I have.

woops nevermind about how you rotate the front sight

I had to think about it a little more to figure out I was wrong

I just went ahead and turned it to fold back, it just hits the hand gaurd a little bit holding the sight about and eighth inch higher than it would if it was all the way closed. No biggie. I can't wait to shoot this thing. Maybe I'll wait until monday so I can take the ar and the amd-65 I bought off budsgunshop.com today.

I see nothing wrong with A2, peep or ghost ring sights. Out of those i like A2. I prefer a non illuminated scope with classic crosshairs or German #4 crosshairs for precise shooting and an Eotech for everything else.

I think the skill to shoot using iron sights is a skill we should learn. The skill is almost universal throughout the firearm industry. It is a great way to learn about elevation and windage. Especially with ARs. I love shooting my 20" HBAR with A2 irons at 200 and 300 yards.

Edit: I zero with the rear ring centered on my target and the front post just below the center of the target. I use a IMBSZ 50/200 zero for my ARs. This is a great system for shooting 55gr 223 out to 400 yards with irons.

Why does it matter which way the front sight folds? I would just go with whatever way lets it go all the way down. I have seen both ways done frequently. There isn't just one "right" way.

The only thing that matters on the folding front sight is that it stays up and locked when you need it.

It stays up and locked but it does have a little play in it when its up. I thought buying 140.00 yankee hill sights I wouldn't have issues like that. The movement is front to back, not side to side, I guess thats a good thing, lol.
