i am looking at lyman or williams peep sights, for my winchester 94. i can not tell from the companies product description if drill and tapping will be required. i am hoping i could use the action screws.
my rifle was made around the end of wwII, so i am not interested in altering the rifle.

senior chief, the only screws on the left rear are, the screw which holds the trigger assembly and another just in front of the trigger. both of these are inline but just above the bottom of the receiver. are these the screws you had described?

In case he doesn't come back..No, those don't sound like the right ones.

IF you have a late model rifle it might have two screws, horizontally placed (in line with the bore) on the left rear UPPER part of the receiver. They'll be just below the top of the receiver as they'd have to be to mount a sight. They would be small and just about 3/4" center to center, or apart.

If you don't have such holes then yes, your receiver needs to be drilled to mount a receiver sight.

Thought about a tang sight?

Not all rifles had them and I'm not sure when they started appearing.

Good!!! I had to step out. Think seriously about a tang site, I have Lyman and Marbles, both work but the difference is that you have to shim under the Lyman in order to adjust for windage. Not a big deal as thats what has been done since they came out 120 years ago. Use brass to shim with, any machine shop should have some slivers of various thicknesses, it doesn't take much. And fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!
