Where I live, a nearby state doesn't recognize my license - no reciprocity. However, it recognizes a license from another state where I have an out of state one. The kicker is that for that one to be recognized, the license holder has to be resident of the state that issued. So my out of state permit is not granted reciprocity in a state that grants in state holders reciprocity. Neat catch if you just look at a reciprocity map.

I haven't seen on the codes reciprocity according to whether out of state permit holders get reciprocity. I guess I could look it up for many states but only did that for the state I was interested in. Bottom line, look for that catch!

Using HandgunLaw

The individual maps are color coded for
Light blue - Honors this state's permit
Red - Does not honor this state's permit
Tan - only honors this state's permit for a resident of that state
For instance, this is the reciprocity map for NY permits
which shows that Michigan will honor NY permits only for NY residents.

GEM is spot on- you must pay attention to this detail.

Thanks for the link. I was too lazy to search this morning. My bad.

We call that "engineering". Engineering is nothing but clever laziness. The way I see it, you probably knew another member would post the research anyways.

I'm good as long as I stay out of the obvious red states, so Yay!

I use the HandgunLaw site too before I travel to know what current law is in the states I'll be visiting. Great app!

Maybe it's been happening all along and I'm just noticing, but I've noticed several educational threads initiated by the mods and I want them to know it's very much appreciated.
