I have longed for a Marlin 1895cb .45/70 and finally got an 01 a week or so ago. I also picked up three different loads then bad weather and a stupid hectic schedule got in my way for a few days. Finally I said screw it.
I really should have done this on a bench or at least some sand bags but there was no time to set it up.
At 40 yards free standing in snow 1/2 way to my knees.
405gr at 1250 fps came in 2" low.
300gr at 1800 fps was 1" high
325gr at 2020 fps was 4" high. (Maybe a flinch?)
I've never had a "big bore" rifle before, I only took 3 shots and I know there are many variables in play but it got me wondering...
With a long 26" barrel would the recoil from higher velocity round cause enough muzzle rise to make those differences.
When I can get some snow scraped back I will set up some a table and sand bags.
By the way. I really like this rifle!
