Want to put a recoil pad on a Remington 7400. It comes with a steel butt plate, but I want a recoil pad. But...when I try to find one for the 7400, it doesn't seem to be offered in the Brownell's, Midway catalogs.

So here's my question, is the 7400 stock the same as another Rem stock? Like a 700 or 870?

Advice appreciated.

Same as a 4/740/742/750. Steel butt plate would be an old rifle. Except 7400's were made between 1981 and 2004.
Plan 'B' would be a slip on from Pachmayr. Adds about an inch and requires nothing else. inexpensive and works well too. Hade one on a 1903A4.

If you put a pad on the stock, you need to cut the stock back the thickness the new pad will add to it.

Otherwise, you will end up with a stock that is too long.

A Pachmayr Decelerator 752B is a 1 inch thick grind to fit black pad and is available is the medium size for about $30. A good gunsmith will charge you an hour's labor or about $60 to shorten your stock and install the new pad. Total cost will be around $100. You will have to decide whether or not a recoil pad is worth the cost. This pad is well worth the cost if you want to enjoy shooting the rifle.
