I bought a Swiss k-31 about a month ago. Great rifle - super accurate - very fun to shoot. Except the recoil is killing me. After about 15 rounds my shoulder really starts to hurt. This is the first time recoil has ever bothered me with any firearm. I've been putting a folded towel between the butt and my shoulder, but that doesn't work so well. Mounting a recoil pad on the stock is out of the question. So I guess my only other option is some sort of recoil pad that I can wear on my shoulder. Up until now I've always thought those things were for whimps, but I guess I am now a whimp!

I don't know anything about recoil pads - what are some good ones? I need something I can use without adjusting for standing, kneeling, sitting and prone.

There are shooting vests you can buy that have recoil pads built in or can be put in. Example It would probably not give you the protection that a true recoil pad would, but should soften the blow a little bit.

That's an interesting device, but I don't want to modify the rifle in any way. I know the steel butt plate is what's killing me, but I'd rather wear a shooting jacket than modify the rifle. And I'd rather not have to wear a jacket all the time.

I've seen a kind of compression-type undershirt that has a custom moldable pad, but I'd think that would only be good for one shooting postition.

I also think a slip on pad would work well. I have used a Limbsaver slip on pad and it never affected the finish of the rifle stock. It really does tame the recoil. I would rather have a slip on pad than something I'm wearing, But that's just me.

I just installed the PAchmayr F990 on my MArlin 1895 .45-70 last month

I haven't test shot it yet, haven't had a chance to yet BUT it looks like the softest pad money can by. IT's a grind to fit bad so unless you have a handheld power sander or belt sander you may have to go to gunsmith which will cos tyou another 50-100 bucks. But it's well worth the money in my opinion if you plan on having the rifle for a long time... what does it matter if you have a nice scope and the best flat shooting cartridge money can by if your not comfortable holding/shooting your gun. Shooting is all about technique and if your comfort sucks your technique will suck. Also remember that adding any aftermarket pad will increase your length of pull so unless your tall like me (6'3'') and have long arms you may want to measure and make sure you dont go to fat or you wont be able to reach the trigger or operate bolt/lever comfortably

Took me about a week of sanding to get it done completely

I had to get this particular pad cause .45-70 has nasty kick especially with hotter loads

If i were you though i would check out PAchmayr's website they have a bunch of different pads designed from low kicking rifles to the heavies kicking shotguns and rifles like mine

it took me quite a bit of shopping around to find mine

OK - so I got the GRaff's & Sons buttplate adaptor, but haven't gotten around to slapping a recoil pad on it yet. Does anybody have any recommendations for a good grind to fit recoil pad that will fit the K 31's weird dimensions (wide at the bottom)? I'm not looking for maximum recoil reduction - a thin pad will do fine. I really think most of the problem was the steel butt plate.
