been thinking about a 1911, and never had one, i have $700 to spend, what would be the best one to buy?
thinking about a colt defender what are they running now days?

thanks for any info

Build one

For $700 I would buy a fitted frame and slide, perhaps with a prefit barrel and bushing. Then buy hammer, trigger, grip safety, mainspring housing etc.
You would learn how it operates and you would get something that is set up the way you want. There are some kits that have the hard stuff already done, things that take special tools to install certain parts.
If you get a alloy or stainless frame, you don't have to worry about bluing.
This assumes you have a idea now of what you want.
I'm thinking of setting up a dedicated frame for my .22 conversion unit. I came up with just under $500 without a slide or barrel, by pricing stuff from the Midway catalog. There are many places to find frames, parts etc.
For now buy some shop manuals and videos etc and learn about the 1911. This will be helpfull even if you go buy a completed pistol.

Look at the Taurus PT1911.
About 500-550 Blued, 675-725 stainless
These are nice guns. Nicely equipped, good trigger out of the box.

I have had great luck with mine, and have a couple other guys I know, they like theirs.

With the ecomomy the way it is, be on the lookout at pawn shops, and people going to gunshows, the good deals do show up.

i totally disagree with someone that is unfamiliar with the 1911 trying to build one.
check out the sa loaded series, the taurus pt1911. also the RIA

What about the govt. model? I bought one years ago [parkerized] took it out and shot it hiting the bullseye the first time. Wish I still had it but that was about 12 years ago.

Rob is right, the SW1911 model 108282 is a heck of a deal for the new 1911 owner. I just ordered and received mine, but I haven't gotten to shoot it yet. Fit and finish is excellent.

The Springfield Loaded series are solid entry level guns along with the Dan Wesson's. Try no to let price drive you so much when you're out there looking at all the different manufacturers versions. Yeah the cheapest model like a Rock Island or Taurus might be appealing to a beginner, but in the long run you'll be better off getting a middle of the road instead.

earplug - how do you do this legally? (Can you buy al the pieces w/o using an FFL then asemble a functioning weapon?)

FFL needed for the frame

You would have to have the frame sent to a FFL dealer.
In the past I pay for the firearm out of state, then have the firearm sent to my FFL. This saves on local, state sales tax. You have to deceide on cost of shipping and what ever your FFL charges you.
The rest of the parts can be mail ordered without problems.

1911/pistols

I agree with rustynuts on the springfield gi pistol, its a great buy at around $500.00.I also own one and never had any real major problems with it.I also specalize in the 1911 pistol.this a great design.:what:I also added a rowland 460 drop in kit to my pistol around april of this year.Talk about some serious power,I also reload for this cartridge

So, the frame is already serialized (like an AR lower) and has to go through an FFL?

Good to go. Thanks.

Ben

I bought the SA Black Stainless loaded for my first 1911, and a S&W1911PD Commander shortly thereafter. Different guns and the S&W is not as good for range use. I can't imagine telling someone who has never owned a 1911 to try to build one. I'm not sure I'm ready, and I put all new ignition parts in the SA, hence my S&W recommendation.

I agree that a new 1911 enthusiast should buy one that's complete and working, with a warranty.

There's not much savings in building one by the time you add up all the parts and their shipping costs, and there are plenty of opportunities to screw up.

There's no such thing as a drop in part.

how about rock island armory and charles daliy, are they pretty good?

i really like the look of rock islands nice and simple
