A friend of mine is looking to get another 22 caliber rifle. He has a 22 bolt action breech loading (because he lost the clip) "Savage NRA Match" rifle that he uses. He wants to get a semiautomatic 22 rifle to plink with. He says he wants one that looks "WW2 Military" whatever that means. Anyone have any suggestions? Ruger 10/22 and Savage 64 are out because both myself and another friend in our group have those and he wants something different.

Why doesn't he just replace the Magazine for his Savage, for starters? They're only about 10bucks or so I'm sure.
As for a WW2-looking? .22, I've never seen one, good luck on that.

Armscor makes a number of look-a-like 22LR rifles. They are built pretty cheaply though, I want none of them. There's a site named "Rockin Rimfires" that deals with info on replica-22LR rifles. There was an M-1 carbine one, but many the site mentions are no longer available however.

And I would still say to get a 10/22 and trick it out his own way, and you can get 30-round magazines, which is what you NEED for plinking! :D -A 10/22 is the best choice because you can get way more accessories for it than any other rifle by far. Magzines, stocks, barrels, trigger parts, extended bolts and mag releases. There was even a bullpup-conversion kit for a while I remember seeing.

If by "WW2 looking", he means "old", this might be a job for Taurus' replica of the Winchester 63. It's semi-auto, looks retro, probably none of his buddies have one. Apparently it can easily be equipped with the Taurus tang aperture sight; huge plus in my book.

I have no need for a .22 rifle currently, but I am sorely tempted by this piece. So I'll just enjoy it vicariously. My interest was piqued by the review at www.gunblast.com (I've got to stop reading that page, almost as expensive as THR)

Your friend may have fun with a 10/22 and MG-42 stock kit. For $150 plus any old 10/22, he can produce a menacing replica of a notorious nazi LMG.
Other possible but probably more expensive options include one of the Calico helical magazine guns or something called a 180(?) that used a Lewis gun type pan mag. Both of these have been out of production for awhile, but if you're determined to come up with something different, you may have to work at it.

H&R once made a single shot rifle called the sahara, I think, that worked like a semi-auto except the bolt just blew open, awaiting the feeding of another cartridge. It looked a bit like a military weapon. These too are few and far between. He could also get an AR and put a .22 upper on it, by no means in inexpensive project.

Happy hunting!

Found a better pic of the Taurus 63 (copy of J. M. Browning's Winchester 63):

Cool, it's a takedown model too. Ah, temptation. Ad-copy at http://www.taurususa.com/whatsnew/rifles.cfm

Can I offer you an apple?

You are probably thinking of the American 180, it has its own website:
http://www.american180.com/
----->The 180 requires custom "short-magnum" ammo (and I don't know if there are semiauto versions of it even) but there is a 22LR semiauto version to be sure.
~~~~~~~
Gun Trivia: the [fully-automatic version] American 180 is the fastest-firing conventional single-barrel small arm ever sold to the general public anywhere, firing 30 shots per second (1800 rpm).
I have a save bolt action and a remington 597, but my next .22 purchase will be a semi tube fed .22. Marlin seems to make some great guns with this feature. Im not sure what options are out there for a retro wwII look.
Matthew, I hate you, and I hate this board! ;) That Taurus is one nice looking gun ... I can see why you want one ... I can see myself wanting one ... I ... can ... see myself ...
A coupla "WWII" looking options.
1 -- Erma used to make an M1 carbine in .22. There was one at Mahoney's Outdoors in Johnson City TN last year, but I s'pect it's long gone by now.
Ah... here's one:
2 -- AIM surplus last summer was carrying gen-u-ine Mausers in .22, used for training.. Israeli I think. I don't see them now, but here's a couple spendier ones:
Daedelus;
Regardless of what you & his other friend have, I'll still suggest the Ruger 10/22. Why? Because he can turn it into dang near anything he wants. What I'm specifically thinking of is the kit that makes it look like a German MG42! About as WWII as you can get. Plus, if he gets tired of that look in 3 or 4 years, he can then turn it into something else. What more can a good gun nut want outta one gun?
