Looking for a new carry gun. want to get about the same size as kel-tec p11. p11 w/ pinky rest is perfect size, prefer metal or alloy in .45 possibly 9mm. I'm having a hard time finding the one I want. I like thin and not too tall. Any Ideas? thanks for the ideas:D

Only .45, that I know of, slim enough to approach p11 size is a 3" 1911.

Good luck finding a reliable 1911 that small.

Better of with Kahr PM9 or if they have a .40 cal, Walther PPS, Keltec PF9, Glock 27 etc. etc.

Kahr PM45 none close even

length 5.67"
height 4.49"
width 1"
Barrel 3.14"
weight 17.3 ounces

best DAtrigger on the market IMO. extremely accurate and some state even POCKETABLE..

SPRINGFIELD MICRCO 45

lenght 6.75"
weight 24 ounces
barrel 3".
SINGLE ACTION ONLY.
colud not find the height or weight.

just not going to find anything as smallas the Kahr PM45..

pm45 might be the ticket, just wish i could find something similar with a metal frame. I might research 1911 reliability in their smaller sizes.

I would like to second (or third, or fourth) the Kahr PM45. I love my PM9 - fantastic handgun.

Also agree with the other posters - getting a reliable 3" 1911 is a risky proposition. My friends Kimber Ultra CDP has been a problem child since arrival - and it gave me a nasty hammer bite.

Size-wise the Para Ordnance C6. Mine's a great size but it's a little heavy. But I always marvel at the compactness of my Taurus PT145.

AMT Backup,High Standard is making them now.The DAO trigger leaves a bit to be desired, but in a stress situation you probably won't notice...All steel,so pretty heavy for their size...

prefer metal or alloy in .45 possibly 9mm.

So if I am reading you right, you are not totally against a 9mm, but are set on P11-ish size and metal frame? I think that will probably make it easier to find something, what with 9mm being a little shorter and easier to make a small gun for. How about the Springfield EMP? I think they are coming out with it in .40 soon if they haven't already.

If i get metal frame it looks like 1911 platform. I have a few options now for poly frame:cool:thanks guys. I'm also going to look at metal 9mm single stacks, but not 9x18 or .380

If you're open to a 9mm the size of a P-11------------why not a P-11? If you want slimmer, the PF9 comes to mind. By the way, 20yrs ago, it might have been true that 3" 1911s were "Iffy". Not true these days! Most any from a reputable manufacturer run just fine. Sometimes shoot IDPA matches with an Ultra Carry. Shoots and runs like a big gun!

I geuss the hard part is finding the gun i want in metal, or best of all stainless:D Probably save up for 1911,9mm,stainless. that will put a serious dent in the wallet:eek:

No one has mentioned the Taurus Pt-145. If is very close to the size of a P-11 and carries 10 rounds. If also has better sights and a better trigger than the P-11. I handled one at the store and I was sorely tempted to get one.

The PT145 is a nice gun, but it ain't even close to P11 size, though it matches the firepower, unless you go with the 12 round mags for the P11. I would want a DA/DAO verson of a PT145, though, not the single action. I probably wouldn't carry it much, though, as it's too big to pocket and the P11 just disappears in a pair of carpenter's jeans pockets. The P11, at 14 ounces, is 10 ounces lighter, too. Mine shoots with my son-in-law's PT145 for accuracy, maybe a little off. It groups 3.5" and to POA at 25 yards. His PT145 is about an inch better, but either is plenty accurate for the job at hand.

I think the Kahr is the smallest of the .45s I'd actually want to own. I wouldn't spend good money on an AMT, thanks, but no thanks. Had a Hardballer, I'll pass.

I didn't know there even was a pm45.....I'm going to have to check that out.

Glad the small 1911's are working better. Allways wanted to keep one, never found one that works.

The PT145 is a nice gun, but it ain't even close to P11 size,

Have to disagree on that one (but I see you point). They are very similar in size. The P11 is shorter in the grips but neither one fits in the pocket with any of the pants I wear so the small size difference means very little on the waist. If you are pocket carrying it then I can see the difference feeling like much more. So you may be right in that aspect. I traded in my P-11 carry gun for a M&P 9c. When held side by side the difference in size was much smaller than I thought it would be. Niether would work well in the pocket for me. Personally, when you get to that short of a barrel I'm not a big fan of the .45. I think that when you go to a 2-4 inch barrel the 9mm or 40 are better performers for most. They operate at higher pressures and lose much less velocity in the short barrels.

Welll...

If you're really dedicated to this concept, try Detonics or C&S ADventurer.
Cheers, J

...and don't let anybody tell you under 4.25 is not reliable.
They're simply wrong.

Jesse, I knew your CS45 would show up in this thread.

I've been scouring the web for more info on them since you gave me info over at the S&W site....I'm sold. Thanks!

If you want an all-metal gun, you could also take a look at the Kahr K9/K40 and MK9/MK40. Same size as their polymer counterparts, but a lot heavier. I have a K9, and its been super reliable, good trigger, etc etc. Definitely pocketable in shorts with big pockets (which I rarely wear, so not that much of a plus for me...)

Glad you weren't disappointed... :)

I'm NOT by nature a 45cal. person, as my hands simply aren't large enough to hold a 1911 comfortably, nor are they easily concealable for me... But I've always had a tremendous respect for the man-stopper reputation of the 45ACP round.

I had access to a 1911 in the military and later on owned a Bolister Molina 1911 but I was always put off by the sheer size of the sucker.

The only reason I wound up with the CS45 is because my favorite caliber for cc (or plinking) is the 9mm round, and I love my CS9. I bought the CS45 as a companion to the CS9 and really didn't expect too much out of it, but it has surprised the heck out of me.

The most pleasant surprise for me in the CS45 was it's accuracy. The first round is DA and truthfully while I can hit "close" to the center ring at self defense distance my first rounds in the CS45 didn't hit in the X ring (close, but no "weo"), but the next three rounds hit directly in the center of the X ring and could be covered by a nickle... The pistol is CAPABLE of very good accuracy if the shooter will do his/her part.

The CS45 is not so much larger than it's small caliber sibling the CS9 that most folks might just prefer it over the CS9 for the improved 45ACP round if for no other reason.

The old adage "bigger is better" is certainly alive and well when it comes to choosing a round that might be used in self defense, and I think the proverbial old 45ACP is about as good a choice as any, and better than most.

Here's my opinion on the 3rd generation S&W line of pistols in general, and the CS45 in particular.

First I think a cc firearm needs to be DA for the first round... I think that adds a safety factor against nd/ad's, especially in a time of crisis. My Glocks and Walther PPS did not offer that, and I didn't feel comfortable with them.. That's just personal opinion, as there are legions of Glock lovers out there. I'm just not one of them. The grips of the Glock 26 I had felt like a brick, and the ever-lite trigger pull was simply not to MY liking.

No offense to those who disagree... It's just my personal opinion.

I think there are other pistols that are absolutely inherently more accurate.. In my experience I've found the Walther P99 and the HK P7 to be good examples of this. But when it comes to RELIABILITY, and reliability is JOB1 for me in a self defense firearm, NO pistol I've ever owned is more reliable than the entire line of 3rd gen Smiths.

In fact, I own a 3913/3913LS/5906/6906/CS9 & CS45 and "so far" (knocking on wood here) I've NEVER had a misfire, or failure to fire of any kind in ANY of them. I can't say that about some of the other pistols I've owned, including some that might print smaller groups..

I think statistics show that in deadly confrontations the action is quick, few rounds are fired, and it happens very close up. So pin-point accuracy (while nice when seeking the tightest groups while target shooting) doesn't mean much, if anything, in a real life confrontation... I'm of the opinion that between the adrenalin rush and trying to keep your bladder and sphincter muscle from releasing all you will have time to do is "point and pull" and whatever weapon you have available will be more than accurate enough if you can point it in the right direction and pull the trigger.

So, for me reliability trumps all other aspects in a self defense firearm, and in reliability the 3rd gen Smith is hard to beat..

Here in SE Ga the heat and humidity of the summers make it impractical to reasonably cc a large, heavy firearm much of the time, so I generally will be found cc my LWS380 in a back pocket holster.. But when I CAN, and feel the need, the CS45 makes for a nice companion to my little mousegun..

I hope you can find a CS45, I think you'll enjoy one. IF the grips are too thick for your taste (they fit my hands perfectly) then a gentleman on this forum "Big Dog" makes custom grips for the CS series that are slim and of high quality and folks who have bought them have been well pleased with the change.

Sorry to ramble.. But I do it so well....

Best Wishes,

Jesse

P.S. please let me know if you get a CS45 and how you like it.

I have had my little C-645 for several years and like it a lot and the LDA trigger is sweet but I had some problems finding a load it liked.

My new favorite is the little Kimber Ultra carry. With the alloy frame it is nice and light. This one likes anything I put in it ammo wise and it is very accurate for a little 3" .45.
