I'll be moving to the south side of Houston, TX soon, in the Sugarland area. Can someone recommend a good CHL instructor?

I'm not looking for a Rambo, but more of a Matlock...

Thanks!
Rich

Where are you moving from? If your not currently living in the big city then you might want to take it before you go because I've heard that you're hard pressed to find an instructor for under 100 bucks in Houston. Whereas I did my instruction in Gatesville for a total of 60 bucks, which included fingerprints and photos. If it's true what I've heard then those Houston teachers must be livin' large.

CHL class in Houston

I went to Jim Pruett's Gun & Ammo...Northwest side of Houston off Hwy. 290 and Huffmeister Rd. Class was entertaining (not a sleeper), fingerprints and lunch included. I paid $110 last year which was average for the area (location worked better than any of the others for me). He's on the web at: www.jimpruett.net

Welcome to Houston,
Jackie

We're moving from the New Orleans, Louisiana area, where I got my CHL and received the requisite training beforehand (12 hrs. class).

I'm pretty sure that training isn't going to be transferrable since Texas has different law than Louisiana, even though the two states share reciprocity.

Fountain Firearms at Highway 6 and Bissonnet is a good gun store and they should be able to help you find a class. I took my class at American Shooting Centers in George Bush Park just west of Highway 6 and Westheimer but the instructo I took from is no longer there, price was $125.00 four yrs ago.

Richard,

Check the forum at http://www.texasshooting.com/TexasCHL_Forum/ - nice people.

I did my renewal at Top Gun, in Houston, a few months ago. The class was good; the instuctor was a contract guy, not an employee of the range.

The range has apparently changed hands recently, reportedly for the better. They had a rule about only "no-lead" ammo for the CHL class, necessitating the purchase of a very expensive 50 round box. That rule is reportedly no longer in effect (they have a good ventilation system).

There is a training place someone told me about, but I have no direct personal experience with them:
Southwestern Arms Training, Inc
3516 Avenue I
Rosenberg, TX 77471

Best of luck with your move. You will probably like the Houston / Sugar Land area, and if you <advertisement> are looking for a gun club to join, consider Bayou Rifles </advertisement>. Also Pearland Sportsmans Club (PSC) - you can find them on the Web. Also Greenwood, somewhat farther South off 288.

Regards,
Andrew
