What: Leg/thigh holster for a Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan .44 mag

Why: Hiking/backpacking out West in grizzly and moose territory with a pack that greatly interferes with a belt mounted holster (or anything else in that position)

When: Need to take delivery of it within ~3 weeks

Preference: Leather, or at least something as non-'tactical' in appearance as possible.

Thigh or leg holster with a Super Red Hawk equates to a lot of movement when walking. My thoughts tend to be considering a waist belt cross draw rig. I use one for my "dirty Harry" Your mileage may vary.

I should have specified in my OP, since I knew people would recommend something other than what I was asking about...this isn't for me. It's for somebody else who thinks this is what they want.

Also, a waist cross draw doesn't do any good. It matters not which side of the boy/hip the gun is on, the waistband area is taken by the supporting straps/load bearing deal for the pack. The only way I have found to carry around the waist in that circumstance is something like a Safepacker, which I have and have used, but he is not interested in, for whatever reason.

Anybody have anything?

Why not see about a bandoleer style holster? It is worn on the chest. A revolver that size would ride better there than on the leg.

Well, as I said, this is for somebody else and the leg rig is what they think they want.

But I'm not above picking up other options to go alongside.

Any specific recommendations?

I'm looking for specific product/retailer recommendations.

Like, if somebody asked me about a good IWB holster for a small/medium semi auto to carry concealed I would discuss and link comp tac ctac/mtac, milt sparks VMII, crossbreed supertuck, whatever...

Just saying 'google image chest rigs' doesn't help me on picking out something good.

As already said most think a drop leg holster is a bad idea.

I'm not here to ask for advice on what type of holster to get.

Simply Rugged "Chesty Puller System" http://shop.simplyrugged.com/ecommerce/Chesty-Puller-Conversion-System.cfm?item_id=160&parent=672

el indio's recommendation is a good one, though.

I'll consider those, thanks

But does anybody have anything for the leg rig? This is what he thinks he wants and I'm the go-to for this kind of thing, I don't want to just give him something different and say "you are wrong, that isn't what you want, I know better than you, just take this". I would consider that rude and am not looking to go down that road.

You should tell your friend what the responses on the forum were. Maybe he or she will rethink their idea of a leg holster.

He hikes a few miles with a leg holster, he'll figure out what a terrible idea it is. That's why you're getting so few suggestions, because it's a terrible idea. The Chesty Puller is probably the best bet for getting one in 3wks. That or find something that can attach to the backpack straps.

How about a 1950's TV Western rig? It's low, tied to the leg and it will, apparently, drive some people crazy.

Ask your buddy if he thinks hanging a 3.5 pound rock off his pants would be a good idea. Don't use factory holsters myself. Make my own. And it'd be a cross draw for the Super Redhawk I'm in desperate need of. On a very good gun belt. No nylon or anything like it.
You'd best explain that a .44 Mag, a .480 Ruger or a .454 Casull will not stop Yogi or Bullwinkle in their tracks too. Worse out of that wee barrel. Muzzle flash and blast will be impressive though.
TV Western rig's are TV/movie nonsense. Not made for reality.

As it stands I went with the Simply Rugged pancake holster with removable thumb snap and the chesty puller system.

The muzzle flash from the 2.5" barrel isn't that bad actually. Comparing top of the line Buffalo Bore rounds against each other my 4" GP100 in .357 mag has more perceived muzzle flash, actually.
