Had to sell my RRA back in 2019 (long story), looking for a new AR. Here's my wish list -- not sure if I can have them all in one rifle?
  • Under $1000
  • Carbine length
  • Direct impingement system preferred
  • Free floating fore, able to mount an optic (RDS)
  • Chromed barrel
  • Durable, reliable (obviously)
This is for plinking, HD, etc., not for hunting.

Any recommendations gratefully received!

I was hoping for an off-the-shelf solution, it's been close to 20 years since I put one together.

Nitrided I think:

Just a little over a thousand:

The Ruger MPR checks all the boxes except maybe the chrome lined barrel for off the shelf. I wouldn't worry about the chrome lined barrel. The only trouble would be finding one.

Do yourself a favor and get a mid-gas system. Here is a quality 16” upper on sale. Looks like last one in stock. Plenty of budget left to finish off.

That's a good upper but as soon as you add a BCG, you're over the budget without even starting on the lower. However, if I wanted a "good" AR that I was gonna trust with my life and not just a cheap blaster, I'd increase my budget, get that upper and put together a decent lower to go with it.

Before optics, I have about $800 in this one that I just put together and except for the barrel, it was mostly cheap parts. An ATI lower, AR Stoner upper and CMMG lower parts kit.

If this helps... you basically save 10% if you buy the complete upper, and the lower separately... it isn't considered a rifle ( or something like that ) if you purchase the 2 separately.
You won't see the actual discount... but that is why PSA sells so many uppers and lowers separately.

And I own a few of the PSA FN barreled, CHF CL uppers... a great, durable barrel, and mine have all been great shooters.
