Red Dot on a Blackhawk?

A regular Blackhawk or a flat-top? The regular Blackhawk is compatible with short mounts that replace the rear sight, or the longer no-drill mounts that also clamp to the barrel. Nothing available for the flat-top, that I have seen.

Here’s my .30 Carbine Blackhawk that I want to put a red dot on:

I’ve always assumed that it’s a flattop?

I have the Griffon Hill mount and a Burris Red Dot on my new model .357 mag. I like the combo. The no drill mount also works well but is not as compact and neat.

Jski…if that’s exactly how your gun looks in profile it’s not a flattop. You have the change Ruger made with the receivers rear (raising it slightly) to protect the sight from damage.

The .30 Carbine would be the one BH I’d be tempted to put a red dot on as well.

That’s a picture from Ruger’s website but it’s exactly what mine looks like.

If your shooting that 30 carbine from the bench I would use a scope, standing two hand a red dot will work, but your going to have to get a good one because of recoil. Think of the dot as a scope "smaller the dot the higher power".

For 50 to 100 yards I use a 3mil, but for 0 to 50 I use a 8 mil because the 8 mil is easier to see especially be 7 and 15 yards. The Weigand mount is going to work better for that big Blackhawk

Nope. The original Blackhawks known as "flat-top" had a completely flat top strap. In 1962 they incorporated the ears around the rear sight and that stands to this day. Ruger reintroduced the flat-top with the 50th anniversary Blackhawks in 2005-2006 and there have been more special runs using the same frame. Here's a flat-top in the foreground, eared model in the background.

Had a young man let me use a Red Dot and I liked it, now I have 9 of them 7 revolver and 2 rifle. :)

For the life of me I can't remember the name of the maker but I bought one that fits the new model Ruger's. My use was for a single six and the mount is of excellent quality and replaces the rear sight. It has one design defect as when tightened down it tilts down in front. I made a spacer from aluminum to correct this but I finally decided a red dot on a single action revolver to be too cumbersome to suit me and returned to iron sights. I lost a little in accuracy of course but am doing nothing except shooting steel and if the gong is large enough it makes no difference.

Alright guys, now that you know it’s for a not-flattop .30 Carbine Blackhawk with a classic 7 1/2” barrel, which red dot would you recommend?

Vortex or Burris make good dots, I use Burris, but there are many good manufacturers and It depends on your budget more than anything.

Honestly, it's 2024 time for Ruger to get with the program and predrill tap and dev. a picatinny mount for the Blackhawks. FA had this 10 years ago or more.

Can't speak for the Blackhawk, but I have a Holosun 407c-gr on my 29-3 and I like it a lot. I used to have a Burris Fastfire on it, and while it worked fine I like the green dot on the 407 better. I have an astigmatism and the green is a little easier on my eyes.

The Weig-a-tinny requires a compatible base for the red dot sight and increases the overall height of the mounting apparatus. The EGW style mounts the sight much lower (which I prefer).

Guys, I had this sent to my gunsmith for my .30 Carbine Blackhawk:

I’ll keep you up to date!
