I'm looking at a GP-100, .357 with a red dot sight (BSA). Looking at Midway's catalog there is about a 10:1 range in price. Does anyone have a good explanation for this range? Do you get what you pay for?
Some of the sights cost more than the gun/sight combo.
Thanks in advance.

Yes, you get what you pay for. The cheap BSA models aren't something I'd put on anything larger than a .22 rifle. The cheap ones aren't the best at retaining zero with a large recoil.

In general... yes. Optics is one area where money spent really does directly relate to quality/reliability/service.

For your .357, I'd suggest skipping Midway and go to www.larrysguns.com for an UltraDot.

Really...

They are just like rifle scopes, would you put a $39 scope on anything but a $50 rifle? You get what you pay for. I like the Leupold/Gilmore red dots, as well as the C-More and OKO holographic red dots.

Put a weaver rail and a C-More Railway on your GP, it will be a couple ounces lighter than anything else you can get. If you use 2 #357 batteries the battery life is amazingly long. Brightness is adjustable, scope is weatherproof, field of view isn't compromised at all, and the gun will balance better than with a tube type sight on it.

I've got I don't know how many Red Dot sights. A couple old Aimpoint, a couple Tasco and a bunch of $30 BSA sights.

I don't recommend anything but just pass on the service that I've had with them.
Over the years I've had a couple bad ones but I've also had a couple bad Aimpoints and Tascos.

I have the BSA's on everything from 12ga shotguns to 22 pistols.

As far as holding zero? The cheap Red Dots work for me.:)

I've taken several deer each year, for the past eight years or so, with my 1st generation Bushnell Holosight.

I've also used 'em in silouette matches on handguns.

They have ALWAYS maintained their zero. In silouette matches they have very accurate clicks and always RETURN to zero at each range.

They have a HUGE heads-up display . . . and twice I've been able to take THREE deer in mere seconds (once in a clearcut . . . dropping the last deer instantly on a dead run @ 65 yards, and the second time in a thick bottom)!

With a 34" hold over, it will reliably roll milk jugs @ 200 yards.

The rig ALWAYS groups under 2" @ 50 yards on my Model 29.

I now own two of these, and desire no other brand!
