I picked up an 1896 .30-.40 Krag at a Gun Show recently. It is no great collector item, as the the top hand guard and sights have been removed. Someone put a Redfield peep sight set up on it that apprears to be in great shape. However, I have never dealt with aperature sights before. Which one is the elevation screw and which is the windage adjustment? Common sense tells me that the top screw is for windage; and the side screw is for elevation. But I wanted to confirm this as I know nothing about peep sight adjustments. Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Uh, got it backward. The top screw is elevation and side screw is windage. If you look closely there might be an arrow etched on the top of each knob with a "U" or "UP" on the elevation and a "R" or "L" on windage. Once you find the zero at whatever range you like you can lock it in by loosening the little screws in the knobs and rotating to "O" and then locking them down and doing the same with the pointers on the scales. Then you can just jot down your numbers for different yardages. Mine appears to be 1/2 minute clicks, I think some might be 1/4 minute. Hope this helps. Oh, yes. Almost forgot that you can get Williams or Lyman apertures in different aperture sizes that will screw in for different light conditions. Generally speaking, use the smallest aperture that will give you a bright view of the target in available light. The smaller the aperture, the better your depth of field. In bright light with a small app. the target and your front sight will both be in focus.

RE: More questions

Thanks for information. No wonder that wasted half a box of ammo yesterday and was probaly shooting way right or something. However, my Redfield peep sight has no markings or directions of which way to adjust my sights. My basic problem is that my rifle is shooting about 8 inches high at 40 yards. I don't plan to try and shoot anything over 100 yards; so I would like to have a more exact bullseye. Which way should the elevation sights be moved to lower my POI?

Just a second, I'll check. . . . .

OK, back from the gun safe and the Redfield on my 513T says UP is counterclockwise and R is counterclockwise. If that doesn't work you might try the other direction. Not meaning to sound funny, but I'm assuming yours is similar to mine.

RE: I will give it a try

I appreciate the response and information. I will give it a try next time that I get to the range. Hopefully, this weekend.

My Redfeild must be diffrent than the one you guys have. Mine has one screw for elevation and two for windage. Mine mounts right to the back of the recever, on the left hand side.

my rifle is shooting about 8 inches high at 40 yards

Mine is 1 inch high at 250 yards
