I hate to post this as an entire new thread, but I was wondering if there is a difference in penetration on the reduced recoil (tactical) 9 pellet 00 buckshot offered by Remington.

Obviously the recoil will be less, but how exactly do they achieve this?

My main question- should reduced recoil 00 be used for HD or standard 00 9 pellet buckshot?

Thanks for the advice and info!

I saw these with the #4 shot at the store. #4 is 0.13 in diameter, versus 4 buckshot being 0.24 in diameter. So this seemed like expensive #4 target loadings in birdshot. If you can wait a few minutes someone will be along shortly to insult you for even thinking what your thinking :p

They don't alter the laws of physics, so that really means there is only one way. The velocity is going to be reduced too.

00 reduced recoil loads are perfectly adequate for HD IMO. The difference in velocity will not make a significant difference. The faster follow up shots might.

I really don't think it makes much difference. Standard buckshot travels about 1300 fps and reduced recoil about 1100 if my memory is correct. Less powder makes this happen and thats why you get less recoil. Obviously something at 1300 fps will penetrate more but in most situations it won't matter.

I find reduced recoil pattern much better. This tighter pattern extends there range to 30-40 yards (where you can keep most of the pellets on a man size target). Regular 00 buck tends to "doughnut" as it goes downrange and i have seen this to the degree you can miss a man sized target at 25 yds.

If you hit something with that buckshot at 1100 fps I think the target will swear that it going at 1300 fps.

If using reduced recoil buckshot means that you will practice with your shotgun regularly and be confident in it's use in an emergency then it far out weighs the moderately increased velocity of the high power load.

There are two ways to achieve reduced recoil- 1) reduce the payload 2) reduce the velocity of the payload.

I prefer to use full load (9 pellet), full velocity (1325 fps) 00 buckshot because I may well be deploying a shotgun oudoors and at longer than across-the-room range. If your 'house gun' is literally just that- intended for use inside- then you are not likely to lose any real effectiveness by loading RR loads IMHO. And the lessened recoil can be a real plus.

There is not much more to be said on this subject, other than I agree that you would probably be better off without the HD shells linked to.

I use nothing but reduced recoil 00 and slugs for HD and match work. If I deploy outside with a shotgun, it has slugs attached for situations over 30 yards. I have used slugs out to 140 yards, so I am confident in their ability. The reduced 00 buck is easier to shoot, and is easier for follow up shots, IMO.

I use Federal LE low recoil 00 Buckshot (9 pellet) almost exclusively...when I can get it. It patterns very, very well (out of my smoothbore) and actually is a pleasure to shoot..over, and over and over again.

I love it for practice and for HD. Its a great load (unless, perhaps, you are an avid hunter).
