I have been working on a reduced recoil load for my 270 Winchester. I normally will shoot a 130 Accubond at 3019fps, but a few years ago I had a major shoulder surgery and I just can't take the pounding anymore from a 7lb rifle.

I used Hodgdon youth load data with H4895. My rifle is a Tikka T3 Lite 22" barrel.

Load: I've dubbed it the 270 Wheenie
Remington Brass
COAL 3.147
39gr H4895
110 Nosler Accubond
CCI Large Primer
2614fps 5 shot avg ES 50 SD 25

It's an accurate load I'd like the ES/SD better but for the ranges I'll be shooting it's not a big deal. Recoil is more than I'd have thought it would be but I have been shooting AR-15 for the last few years. Recoil is a tolerable level and as only a hunting rifle it's gonna be fine.

I used a magnetospeed to get velocity and the five shots I measured were also to zero the scope. The target is 3 shots at 100 yards aiming at the little point on the target. 20190427_110737.jpg

Congrats. You’ve got your .270 down to a little above 30-30 levels, so it should perform at least as good as the 30-30 (probably better since you have a little more velocity and better BC.). Some people frown on down-loading. Maybe it’s not manly enough for them, but you have to deal with your own physical limitations. I’ve done the same thing with 8x57 to deal with shoulder problems.

I carried a .338 Magnum when I lived in Alaska, a lightweight stainless Savage. Worked great for moose and bear, I really liked the rifle. Moved to Texas, nothing there needed a big boomer, so I downloaded with BlueDot - a 200 SST @ ~2400 fps. Killed deer and hogs great, and I still got to use my favorite big game rifle.

Yep, plenty of less sophisticated posters told me I shouldn’t download, I should spend another $1000 on a new, more appropriate rifle and scope. Can you guess what my reply to them was? ;)

I have a slip on limbsaver recoil pad on it. I have not considered a muzzle brake barrel is pretty thin. Us like to avoid modifying the rifle if at all possible

I downloaded 30-06 to shoot in my M70 Featherweight a few years ago with H4895. I was happy with the results, and as you I could still use my favorite rifle.

here's a 130gn-lite load for you:

two different rifles, same load.

not real soft, but real accurate!

a good shoulder pad would help here.

luck,

That's great. I started the same project last year with a 270 tang-safety Ruger I bought for a steal. I was about to get "ok" groups, but I was short on time and needed to just get it up and running so I could get out to the woods. I ended up using 120gr SST bullets that are meant for the 6.8 SPC, but they work in the 270 also. I think this year I'm going to spend more time with the rifle and move up to 130gr Sierra Gameking bullets and try to work up a much better load for this rifle.

I need to spend more time improving what I already have than buying more stuff. It's so hard though..
