Reloading .410

I've been reloading the 2 1/2" Remington cases, as well as the WW cases for years using the Claybuster wads, a regular Fioche, Remington, CCi or any 209 primer. I usually use #7 or 8 shot. I also reload the 3" Remington and WW cases again using the Claybuster wads. For powder I've been currently using H110, although I've used WW296 in both.

BTW I've been using a MEC 600 Jr., it is really no different than loading for 20ga. or 12ga. the sequence is the same, once your reloader is set up properly there really is no difference. I myself prefer Galiliel for components.

410's

Ballistic products can supply anything you want to reload the 410 and precision reloading can also.....I have been reloading it for 30 plus years....and components are available.

Buy a flat of the Winchester AA ammo. Expensive to start, but they are the best for reloading and will last a loooong time. A flat will run about $100. Claybuster and Downrange sell clone wads a lot cheaper than OEM ones - by half. If you are going to shoot it a lot, then buy a case of 5000 for the recipe you want.

Personally, there are cheaper alternatives to Midway if buying by the case

I always wanted to try the thing Turner used to write about his sons doing in the old Dixie Gun WOrks catalog , reloading .410 with BP. newspaper wadding and a Lee hand loader.

Busyhands94 almost talked me into it with his adventures and his hand loader.

As a Youth, many tree rats fell to the team of me and a Winchester 37 in .410. I liked the little fella.

410 is one of the shotgun sizes that you will save money reloading. At 10-15 bucks a box for new AA 2 1/2" you should be able to load em for about 5.00 a box. Claybuster wads and H110/W296/MP-300 and a bag of 9 shot. Precision Reloading or Recobs Target Shop for components.

The Winchester AAHS hulls are the best for loading. Rem are a distant second. With powder like w296/h110 you may get 8-10 loads out of a hull. I like the Remington SP.410 wad - but Remington wads are getting expensive and hard to find. I have not decided on a wad when I run out of my SP.410's.

If you're loading Winchester 2-1/2" hulls you want to aim for a velocity of 1250-1275 fps for the best patterns. From what I've been told you want to be closer to 1300 with the Remington 2-1/2" hulls.

John, You might try Claybuster wads as they are basically the same as the Remington wads, and very inexpensive. Further I've been using both the WW AA, as well as the Remington in 2 1/2" shells and get about the same amount of reloads from each, I also use the same in the 3" shells with about the same results.

I've used Fiocchi, and Win AA hulls with good results, but I really like the green & black versions of Remington hulls in my 600 JR.
I use Alliant 410 powder with the #12 powder bushing that actually drops 12.4gr of Alliant 410 in my Mec, using Claybuster's SP-410 replacement wad to push a 226gr shot charge from a modified shot bar. I used to use Win 209 primers, but price and availability allowed me to buy 5K of the Wolf 209 primers and they work as well as the Winchester.
The load patterns well, and compliments my Stoeger Condor O/U 410 very well when shooting clay targets.
