Reloading the 5.7 X 28fn

Be cautious. There's been a few Kabooms on reloaded FiveSeven ammo... Everything is different.. even the coating on the cases requires different cleaning procedures than normal brass. It's a tapered cartridge that headspaces on the case walls, which makes proper sizing critical. Not to mention the low powder capacity that leaves little room for error...

As mentioned above the FiveSeven forums are pretty much the definitive source on reloading for it; manufacturers have been hesitant to accept it or publish data for the cartridge for the above reasons. You have to load Five Seven with a different mindset than other ammo.

Also, some early reloading dies were improperly made and do not size the cases correctly. So if you bought those dies second hand, you might want to look in to it! Maintaining the correct taper on the cartridge is critical to ensure it's supported properly when fired. Some reloading dies have been known to alter the degree of taper, meaning the case would be largely unsupported when fired, or headspace improperly.

Don't freak when the sizing die moves the shoulder back .040 or more.

It is normal with the case in the type actions it is fired in. The cases fail at the shoulder junction after just a few loadings. When fired in a contender etc, sizing is normal, but not when fired in the Five Seven pistol or the PS 90 rifle.

Have fun, be safe. :)

I am not the most experienced on this cartridge, but i have laoded a few. Scared the crap out of me too. Are you loading for the pistol or the rifle? Remember the cases are laquerd. Be careful with your sizing die.

I have just got a set of dies, but can not find any reloading info.
The new lyman reloading manual has data on the cartridge. They explain how finicky it is and how much a tenth of a grain of powder can make a difference. Work up in small small small increments.

Yep, they case shoulder moves forward a lot! So, make sure you set the sizing die so that you are able to push the shoulder back. Remember, the shoulder being work back and forth .030-.050 is really working that brass

Make sure you trim to length and push the shoulder back enough so that the round will chamber. Pretty much like a semi auto rifle. Size a few and test them. And work up SLOWLY!

The laquer on case is mainly for the PS90 carbine, as it aids in the rotation of the cartridge. The cartridges have to turn 90 degrees from the magazine to the chamber, kind of a strange system IMO. For the FiveseveN pistol, the laquer isn't really needed, but best to leave it be. I reload for the 5.7x28mm, and only use a single stage press, IMO it gives me more time to observe things more carefully. I only load for the 5.7 pistol, so I don't really clean my cases like you should for the PS90. FWIW though, my cases just don't seem to get dirty like many of other cartridges I shoot. I just spray my cases really well with One Shot spray lube before resizing them. LM
