I just bought a slug barrel for my 1100, and this little gem came with it. If I place it on the magazine ring the way it is obviously intended to be placed, it prevents the fore end from being re-mounted on the gun. The barrel is a 20" slug barrel with a 3" chamber. Is this part necessary? Is it even intended for use with the wood fore end? I really don't want to shoot the gun until I'm sure it'll be OK to do so. Thanks in advance!

It is indeed a 11-87 part (not for an 1100) and that tells me you may have the wrong slug barrel. Best investigate a bit more.

Here you go. First pic is an 1100 and the second an 11-87. See the cut away on the 11-87? that is where that gas collar goes.

Sure enough, I have an 11-87 barrel. It fit into the receiver like it was made for it, but I take it that the gun should not be fired with this barrel?

Thanks for your help, guys!

Correct, you can't use it. Send it back or if you can't send it back sell it. The part you want is part number 25970 on the Remington parts list and retails for $292 by calling Remington and follow the prompts to parts to order. It is 21" Fully rifled with rifle sights. However, that barrel is listed on Gun Broker for less. Or, part number 29565 which is a 21" rifle sight smooth bore with Rem Choke and comes with one rifled tube and an I/C tube and choke wrench and retails from Remington for $227 and like the other is also listed on Gun Broker for less. shop around and you may find them cheaper then even on gun broker.

Thanks, AI&P; I bought this one off Gunbroker, and the seller has the correct barrel on sale, but for $25 more what I paid for this one. Hopefully we can just swap barrels, and I'd be happy to make up the difference. I've never owned an 11-87, much less had one apart, so I didn't know what I was looking at when I bid. Live and learn!

Just for the record, the 11-87 barrel is 21", 3" chamber, matte finish, rifled Rem Choke, with rifle sights. No similar tube with a 3" chamber is offered for the 1100, but a 2 3/4" chamber is not a deal breaker. If this deal goes south I'll be posting this barrel in the For Sale section.

Thanks again for the help, everyone! I was going to take the gun out to my favorite dirtbank tomorrow and run some rounds through it, so y'all may have saved me from a serious discombobulation.

Yes, the 29565 is 2 3/4" and is in the high luster blued finish. However, I believe the 243191 is the same barrel in the Special Purpose finish and should be a 3" chamber and retail is $225. I do not have any of those in stock so you should check with Remington on that info. Of course if your 1100 is 2 3/4" only this is of no interest to you.

My 1100 has the Magnum receiver, so 3" is completely doable; I just don't consider it necessary. I would prefer the matte finish to the blued, since I might be using the barrel for coyote or turkey hunting as well as HD duties. I didn't see a 21"/3"/RC/RS 1100 barrel on Remington's website, but maybe I just missed it. I'm scouring Gunbroker and Evilbay for "Plan B" barrels in case the seller and I can't reach an agreement. I don't foresee any trouble, though.

Ajumbo - not saying you did this but most guys go to the Remington web site and look in the Country store, don't find something and think it is not there. The Country Store is not the parts list. It is run by a contrator and sells common parts, discontinued parts and over runs only.

On the main page of the web site click on support and in that drop box click on Parts Information. When that page comes up down load the "Parts Price List" in PDF. There is the barrel, part number 243191 21" Rifle sight, Rem Choke Matte finish. Call 800-243-9700 and follow the prompts to parts to order and simply order by that parts number. But if you do please ask to make sure it is 3" as I have never seen one but know the 1100 SP models are 3" chambers.

If you have a 3" receiver I would use the 11-87 barrel. You may have to add a shim to get the fore end to hold the barrel snug, but a piece of PVC pipe works nicely.

You can not use the 11-87 barrel as the gas cylinder is in a different location. Also barrels for 1100 Magnums have one gas orifice and that 11-87 Barrel has two. Number of gas orifices and the size of the orifices are determined by the model, length of the barrel and designed load. Yes the weapons are similar but different and the have very different barrels.

I went ahead with a 2 3/4"-chambered barrel, since the seller had one on hand and offered to swap out straight across.

That being said, if anyone wants the 11-87 barrel in question, E8stew on Gunbroker is a pure joy to work with, and probably wants to get rid of that accursed tube. He is a first-rate vendor!

I hate to disagree, but I have swapped 12 gauge 1100 and 11-87 barrels numerous times, but I have to admit I have not done it with a 20 gauge that I can recall, AND the 11-87 barrels did not have the step down like you show on the gas ring in your picture. The ones I was working with looked exactly like the schematic. Maybe it's been longer than I thought and they have changed the design. Of course you also need to make sure the extractor slot and extractors match up as 11-87s have wider extractors than older 1100s.
The single gas port on an 1100 Magnum barrel has no gas bleed offs, and it is designed to be used with the heavier action sleeve. That goes for 12s and 20s. The 11-87 has much bigger gas portS, but it also has the gas bleed off ports. If the 20 is different than the 12 and that is what you meant, I can't disagree because I don't know.
