is this a simple as swapping out the old bolt buffer and pad with new parts? the old buffer had the steel lip broken off of it. the rifle was brought to me by a friend it is over 45 years old and it was cruddy inside the buffer pad was hard as a rock!

new parts on order.

what say you 552 experts?

Just that easy

The U shaped clip is actually designed to float in front of the rubber buffer as I recall, no need to replace that, just the rubber.

parts came in today reassembled the 552 and test fired perfectly.!
Buffer and buffer pad sit loosely in top of receiver. I supposed the trigger group holds them in place.?? I assembled the rifle upside down sow the buffer and pad would stay in place when I enserte the bolt etc.

anyone have any tip on this procedure please advise. I fired the rifle 7 times and it worked fine so far???

It's been a long time since mine was apart but that's exactly how I remember it. Here's a link to Numerich Gunparts which has an illustration you can zoom.
Glad to hear it works.

BTW IIRC I put the clip in it's notch first with the tang up toward the top of the receiver and drop the rubber block in with the scalloped side toward the bottom and the tang keeps the clip retained upwards. I hope I described things right.

Thanks I have that diagram in Rem manual. I think I got it correct looking at old parts and trying to figure it out.
Hope buffer and pad stay positioned LOL.
