All,
I have a Rem597 that I really like except for the front sight, it is a post or blade with a white bead on top. I want to remove the bead, and leave the post. I have some space on the rear sight, it is now set up a bit on the rear sight, second notch, so I could lower the rear a bit.

Possible issues?

Is the whole top of the sight white or just the rear surface?

If it's just a bead applied to the back of the post file it off and you shouldn't have to do anything more.

If it's the whole top of the sight your suggestion might work. Is the sight attached to the barrel or integral? If it's attached you should be able to get a replacement if you screw it up.

Sorry I cannot be more definite; I don't have a 597 to look at.

Do not cut the whole thing off.
You may run out of rear sight adjustment if you do.

Drill out the white insert with a Dremel dental bur a little and fill it with flat black model paint.
