I've got a 700p that I want threaded for a suppressor. Normally I'd just have a smith cut it down a few inches (currently 26) and re-crown & thread.

The issue - I've read some less than glowing comments on the quality of rem factory barrels, even on the P models. This is compounded by a chunk of rifling that is missing an inch or two back from the muzzle. I don't know if there are more, as I don't have a borescope. (strangely, it shoots fed GMM Very Very well)

Dillema - do I same some cash and have the bad portion cut off the muzzle, taking the risk there is more damage hiding in the bore, or do I have a fresh high quality barrel threaded and put on?

Any ideas what the price difference might be between these options? The odds there are more flaws in my existing barrel?

Any particular reason you want to make it a shorter barrel with threading? If you wanted a shorter barrel anyhow, then that question is moot.

As far as $$, it'll be less expensive to just thread your current muzzle.

Well, 26" is kind'a long even before adding a suppressor, and there is that chunk of missing rifling an inch or two in from the muzzle...

I would see if Remington will install a new barrel. If so, see if they will agree to a shorter barrel since they are installing a new barrel anyway. Worth a try isn't it?

I'f I'm going to pay for a new barrel, I'm fairly inclined to get something better than the original.

Odd - I could have sworn that I replied to this a while ago...

It is .308
I bought it used and am sure it's well out of any 'normal' warranty. You may be right though... a chunk of rifling that is just missing isn't exactly the kind of damage a person could do with a cleaning rod.... A phone call might be worth while.

AB - I'm working on something similar - a Rem BDL/VS in .308. I discovered that I know a guy who builds supressors(among other "interesting" things) and I was talking to him about doing a QD set up for the Rem and several other .30 cal rifles I own. How big a hurry are you in?

0007 -- It's been a long time. Are you back CONUS now/still/for good?

Zero hurry on this. Between a girlfriend and a job I don't get out to shoot nearly as much as I used to.

What kind of QD setup are you looking at? I'm thinking of putting an AAC 762SD on it.
